Emiliano Martinez required a stretcher to get off the field after a scary collision between the Chelsea goalkeeper and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.

Martinez had to be replaced by Mike Penders and both Martinez and Branthwaite required on-field treatment after a dangerous free kick led to a terrible moment.

Everton defender James Tarkowski said referees told him that Martinez was “out cold” and that it was a frightening situation. Chelsea’s Pedro Neto dedicated the win to Martinez, and manager Xabi Alonso shared an update after the game.

“As far as I know he left the stadium conscious,” Alonso said. “Right now he is in the hospital doing precautionary tests, so let’s see.”

The Chelsea keeper punched Kieran Dewsbury-Hall’s left-footed in-swinger away from goal but collided with Branthwaite’s attempt to head the service on goal. Martinez’s head made violent conduct with the playing surface.

Martinez appeared to make the fencing response — an involuntary movement with an arm away from the body when prone on the ground — and trainers rushed onto the field.

Martinez was responsive and placed on a stretcher with his arms folded over his chest. Reports say he’s been brought to a nearby hospital.

We’ll share any updates as soon as Xabi Alonso or the team speak from Liverpool on Saturday.

Mike Penders, 21, made his Premier League debut in replacing Martinez.

Chelsea have five goalkeepers out on loan including Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen. American goalkeeper Gabriel ‘Gaga’ Slonina and young Teddy Sharman-Lowe are with the team.
