Genesee County commissioners suspended construction of a planned recycling and education center in Flint and directed staff to identify three to six alternative locations.
FLINT, Mich. (WJRT) – Genesee County commissioners have halted construction of a planned Recycling and Education Center at the former McDonald Dairy property in Flint while the county searches for a new location.
The Board of Commissioners voted Wednesday to suspend construction at the property near Chavez Drive and Robert T. Longway Boulevard.
Following the vote, District 1 Commissioner Delrico Loyd introduced an additional resolution directing county staff to identify between three and six alternative locations that could accommodate a permanent recycling and education center.
The board approved that resolution, and the search for possible new sites is now underway.
The county had previously planned an approximately $12.7 million facility at the former dairy property. Plans called for a location where Genesee County residents could dispose of household chemicals, paint, cleaners, electronics and other recyclable materials at no charge while also providing space for environmental education.
The county held a public information session about the Flint site in September before commissioners voted this week to suspend construction there.
County officials have not yet announced which properties will be considered as alternative locations.
