2024 T25U25 Ranking: Ziemer was not ranked last year

Among many things, Brodie Ziemer has going for him is his great-sounding hockey name. You can almost hear Rick Jeanneret cry out BZ’s name for a big Sabres’ goal. (Miss you RJ) It remains to be seen, though, if this Buffalo prospect can make a name for himself in the NHL.

Buffalo has a good-looking prospect on their hands here. Ziemer has strong natural leadership skills. That has been a theme throughout his young playing career. Brodie was captain of his USA hockey team and always seemed to make things happen on the ice. This has continued in his first year of college. While his numbers don’t jump off the page at you, his 12 goals and 23 points were solid. The University of Minnesota winger is just 5’11” but has a strong, compact build at 190 pounds. He can take a bump and keep moving, keep driving a play. He also has a high hockey IQ, good hands, and a high compete level. All good traits to have for any player. Likewise, he drives to the net often, as seen in this OT winner for the Gophers.

Another strong aspect of his game is the penalty kill. Ziemer will hound the puck carrier and often force them into a mistake. He works hard on defense and does a lot of the dirty work. Brodie has a gritty game and will throw a hit or finish his check, too. In case you missed it thus far, there is tons to like with this player. His skating needs improvement, so that’s your first negative. (unless you count his height) I’d like to see a little more finish from him, too. Hopefully, his offensive numbers shoot up in year two of college. Otherwise, Ziemer has a well-rounded game and gives off Mike Peca vibes to me. Those would be lofty aspirations to meet for sure, but it is hard to doubt this kid. He is a confident young man, listen to him talk at Buffalo’s Development Camp.

If you watched the full video, you heard Brodie talk about his buddy Adam Kleber, another strong prospect from my last article. He and the Sabres’ 6th rounder from 2025 (Ashton Schultz) have been friends since they were kids. Zeimer has known Kleber since the third grade, and they played pee-wee hockey together. Brodie Ziemer is an attractive prospect for Buffalo; there is no doubt about that. His attitude, hustle, grit, and leadership would be beneficial for a Sabres team that has often lacked those. His development will be key. I’d like to see him become a point-per-game player for the University of Minnesota this season. Then get a solid two-year taste of the pros in Rochester. His path to the NHL is there. What is in a name? For Buffalo, a potential 200-foot stud player in the Mike Peca mold.
