“It’s nothing compared to superyachts, but I did home health care for this lady years ago. She was getting help for a recent broken hip. I was there to help with her personal care, cooking, etc. This lady’s house was astounding: three stories tall, like an old Victorian place. It was gorgeous. I was helping with her shower on the first day, drying her off. I asked where her laundry basket was, and she told me, ‘Oh, just toss it.’ This woman actually threw her towels away after every use. And I’m not talking Walmart towels. I looked them up, and they cost $58 a towel!”
“And that was 10 years ago. She was a very nice lady, just completely naive about people living paycheck to paycheck. It was wild. She had that ‘old money.’ Never married, no kids. She donated a bunch to the nonprofit I eventually started working at, taking care of kids with disabilities. She was one of the few patients I had in home health that I kept up with after she was better. She was just clueless about money. When she passed a few years ago, she left every bit of her enormous wealth to that nonprofit. Oh, and I may or may not have taken those towels home with me. 😏”
