CHICO, Calif. – A golf prodigy is taking shape at Chico area golf courses. Action News Now Reporter Keith Jouganatos spoke with Rory Moore about his love of swinging the club.
If you happen to be working on your golf game at Butte Creek Country Club one of these days, you could see something so surreal you’d have to see it to believe it. This is Rory Moore, Chico’s version of a golfing prodigy.
Moore won’t turn 3 until November, yet can already swing, chip and putt the golf ball with ease. He’s guided by his father Mason, who says at 1-year-old, he was already hooked on the game.
“He was just over a year old. We got him a set and I really noticed him watching the golfers on TV. We were watching a round and he literally picked up his club and started doing a full swing like he was seeing on TV,” Mason Moore said.
When asked about his and his wife’s instant reaction to seeing their son swing the club before he was even 2-years-old, Mason Moore said it was a natural fit. “It was funny. We kind of both looked at each other and were like well it’s probably a good thing we did name him Rory. It was almost so natural. It was really fun to watch how easy it was for him to pick up,” Moore said.
Apart from the goldfish that come with practice sessions with dad, Rory says his main love comes from seeing the ball take flight. “Hitting it far,” Rory said when asked about his favorite thing about golf.
Mason Moore says despite loving the passion his son has displayed for the game, his main goal right now is to keep it fun for him. “I’ve actually asked the pro here what is the right answer? Both of them said just keep it fun. Keep him happy with him being out here and the growth will happen naturally,” Moore said.
As the swing continues to develop, young Moore says he has one goal in mind as he goes along. “Win,” Rory said.
Rory’s dad, Mason, has been playing golf for more than 20 years himself and remains excited to keep seeing his son progress in the game.
