Forget Liam Neeson, because there’s a new violent father desperate to get his daughter back on streaming. Neeson’s Taken is one of the most iconic action thrillers of this century, and it spawned a litany of copycats following its release in 2008. Many of them (including its own sequels, Taken 2 and Taken 3) were absolutely awful. But in 2026, a new take on Taken was released that blended its plot with the hardcore action of The Raid. After being hailed as one of the best action movies of the year, it is now one of the biggest movies on streaming.

After a surprisingly decent box office performance, The Furious has been a mainstay on streaming for the past few weeks. The film was added to Starz in July 2026, and it has found repeat success on the streamer’s top 10 ever since. Scott Eastwood’s Alarum currently holds the top spot, with Oscar Shaw in second, and Henry Cavill’s In the Grey in third. At the time of writing, The Furious is the eighth most popular movie on Starz in the US. More impressively, it has held a spot in that top 10 for 21 days and counting.

‘The Furious’ Is a Non-Stop Action Thrill Ride

If you skipped The Furious while it was in theaters, then you missed out on one of the most beautifully choreographed and hyper-violent action movies of the year. Liam Neeson might need 12 edits to jump a single fence (Taken 3… if you know, you know), but The Furious delivers blow after blow in that signature Hong Kong style of action, where everything is shown in-camera without tricky editing.

The film stars Mo Tse as Wang Wei, whose daughter is kidnapped by an underground criminal network. Desperate to get her back, he enlists the help of journalist Navin (Joe Taslim), whose wife was also kidnapped. Using Navin’s investigative skills and Wei’s penchant for violence, the pair dive deep into the criminal underbelly to save their loved ones.

‘The Furious’ Holds a Near-Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

Still from The Furious
Lionsgate Films

The Furious isn’t just a fantastic action thriller filled with phenomenal action scenes; it’s also a critically acclaimed film with a moving story. Following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the rave reviews came flying in. The Furious holds a near-perfect 97% Rotten Tomatoes score. Usually, a rating that high comes with an abysmal audience score. However, viewers hold The Furious in similarly high regard with a 95% RT user score.

The film was hardly a blockbuster at the box office. But, considering it’s a low-budget Hong Kong action movie, the film performed surprisingly well. The Furious earned $41 million worldwide, against an estimated budget of under $20 million.
