MICO, Texas – A new push to save Medina Lake after years of drought and dropping water levels.
Now, there’s a group working on a proposal that could change how farmers get their water, with the hopes of keeping more water in the lake.
The proposal would shift farmers away from using Medina Lake water for irrigation and instead provide water through newly drilled groundwater wells.
Mike Sarosdy, who has owned a home near the lake for 20 years, says he’s watched it dry up twice.
He says the lake’s small watershed makes it difficult to refill, while the more than century-old irrigation system adds to the challenge.
They’re hoping to bring the plan before Texas lawmakers during the next legislative session, with Sarosdy saying he’s cautiously optimistic about its chances.
