Heading into the third night of battles on The Voice Season 30, Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green had both used their Steals to adopt an artist from Team Queen while Queen Latifah and Adam Levine were still looking for an opportunity to use theirs.
Kayleigh Mathews and Marcus Ladden Jr. were let go by Queen, but still advanced to the all-new Cut Week round as members of Team Kelly and Team Riley, respectively. Before we see them perform again, 22 more artists must take the stage in their own head-to-head against a teammate.
Serving as guest advisers for the battles are Carly Pearce for Team Riley, Ariana DeBose for Team Kelly, Patti LaBelle for Team Queen, and Alex Warren for Team Adam.
Read on for our recap of the six battles from The Voice’s “The Battles, Part 3,” which aired Oct. 19 on NBC.
Brandon Diaz vs. Bryan Jaymes
Team Queen
Song: “As”
Patti’s advice: Patti wanted Bryan to focus on someone in the audience in order to make the connection and said that if they “give each other chances, you’ll feel it.”
Coaches’ comments: Adam thought that Brandon won the battle, but was still curious about what Bryan can do in the future with Queen as a coach. Queen told them their performance “was fire” and even though it wasn’t an easy song, she wanted them to have “something to chew on.” In the end, Queen went with the guy that is “very comfortable with his own voice.”
Result: Bryan Jaymes wins; Adam steals Brandon Diaz
Allie Rae vs. Harmony McKee
Team Riley
Song: “Ain’t No Sunshine”
Carly’s advice: Carly asked them to hone in on the “longing” emotion of the song by letting loose and allowing “angst” into their performance.
Coaches’ comments: Kelly and Adam both preferred the 15-year-old Allie Rae in the battle while Queen thought Harmony “did great.” Riley said that Allie Rae has “something so interesting” about her voice and Harmony “completely filled the room” with everything she did. He also appreciated from Harmony that she gave a “big sister vibe” to Allie Rae in their rehearsal.
Result: Allie Rae wins
Owen Uffens vs. Wade Turner
Team Adam
Song: “Dive”
Alex’s advice: “Even if their voices crack a little bit,” Alex was interested in taking the guys up an octave in the approach to the song. He noticed that Owen goes flat when he enters the chorus and then found places for Wade to go up even higher at certain parts of the song.
Coaches’ comments: Riley leaned more toward Wade as a winner because he “has a little more room” with his voice, but Kelly was drawn to Owen’s “emotional way of singing.” Adam thought they made a “huge improvement” from rehearsal. He said that Wade has “a little more technical prowess” while he picked up on the words that Owen forgot during the performance. Before making his decision, he called them both “works in progress.”
Result: Owen Uffens wins
Kyle Davis vs. Matthew Chiu
Team Kelly
Song: “Take Me Home”
Ariana’s advice: For Matthew, Ariana wanted him to be aware of when he “comes in hot” on the mic and slow it down going into the harmonies.
Coaches’ comments: After being a one-chair turn, Adam said that Matthew performed in a way that was deserving of more turns even though he still told Kelly that Kyle was the winner. Queen suggested that she choose Matthew instead. Kelly called Kyle’s voice “timeless” with a “special sauce that screams home,” but said that Matthew was “heartfelt and soulful” because of his runs.
Result: Kyle Davis wins
Amanda Mikkel vs. Julia Clark
Team Adam
Song: “Can’t Help Falling in Love”
Alex’s advice: About doing duets, Alex told them “it’s not sacrificing things out of your voice, but allowing the other voice to uplift itself as well.”
Coaches’ comments: The other coaches all recalled how impressed they were with Amanda’s first audition of “Moon River,” but Riley thought that Julia came through as the more impressive one this time. Kelly thought that Amanda would “fare a little better in the competition.” Adam thought they both did better as individuals instead of as a team and sensed a lot of nerves from them. He said that nerves are going to be something he has to tackle with the one that he chooses to move forward with.
Result: Amanda Mikkel wins
Brianna Cameron vs. Saade
Team Kelly
Song: “Mercy”
Ariana’s advice: Both Kelly and Ariana had to work with them to not “give them all the good stuff at the top” and to strip it back so that they’re collaborative instead of combative as vocalists.
Coaches’ comments: Adam named Brianna as his winner because of how good she is for her age while the coaches picked up on Saade’s “slip up” in the song. Kelly was proud of Saade for not letting her performance get ruined and had to leave Brianna with the note that she turned her back to the audience a few times.
Result: Brianna Cameron wins
