Carter Smith, a Brigham Young University freshman from the western Iowa town of Honey Creek, earned $2 million for himself and $1 million for charity with the successful kick. Smith didn’t play football at Underwood High School but did play soccer, BYU’s student newspaper reported.

His first attempt missed, but he adjusted for his second try.

“Obviously, when I got a second opportunity, I was so relieved,” said Smith, who was dressed as Spider-Man for his big moment. “I felt like I had a second chance. I felt like I could kick in a different spot, because the first time I kicked low and to the right. I aimed high and to the left, and it worked out.”

Smith, who plans to become a dentist, said he intends to invest the money.
