Now, Diggs will presumably be quarterback Jayden Daniels’ top target with Dyami Brown, rookie Antonio Williams and Treylon Burks being forced into larger roles.
Earlier on Monday, Washington had placed lead running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt on injured reserve.
Winless over the last three games, Washington is in dire straits offensely, though there remains the saving grace of its residence in the NFC East. Over the past two weeks, all four division teams went winless, with the New York Giants (3-2-1) remaining in first place, followed by the Philadelphia Eagles (2-4), Dallas Cowboys (2-4) and Commanders, in that order.
After hauling in a 27-yard catch on Washington’s first drive, McLaurin was injured later in the first quarter. He was engaged with 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir on a pass play when he crumbled to the ground, immediately clutching his left knee.
He was subsequently fashioned with an air cast and carted off the field.
McLaurin, a five-time 1,000-yard receiver and two-time Pro Bowler, finished the season with 15 receptions for 230 yards and one touchdown.
