MAYPORT, Fla. – An attorney says his client suffered multiple broken bones and facial fractures after an e-bike rider struck her on the Wonderwood Bridge sidewalk, and he is urging state lawmakers to strengthen safety rules.
Curry Pajcic said his client, Kelly Lund, was walking across the bridge Oct. 17 when the collision happened. He said she was traveling 35 to 45 mph and showed photos of blood on the Wonderwood Expressway sidewalk.
“Our City Council and our mayor passed a law that mandated no more than 15 miles an hour,” Pajcic said. “If there’s a state law, everybody would know about it and it would make our streets safer.”
Pajcic said Lund’s injuries include broken bones and multiple facial fractures. She faces additional surgeries and dental work, he said.
Dr. Shilpa Amin, chair of emergency medicine at HCA Memorial, said the hospital’s trauma center sees two to four e-bike injury cases per week.
The Jacksonville City Council passed legislation in September lowering the sidewalk speed limit for e-bikes to 15 mph.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that it expects riders to operate safely and obey applicable laws.
“We take the issue of reckless and unsafe e-bike use seriously, particularly when it poses a threat to motorists, pedestrians, and other road users,” the statement said.
“These motorized bicycles are dangerous and they can be deadly and something needs to be done about them,” Pajcic said.
