On a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the iconic St. Andrews golf course in Scotland, a strong gust of wind turned what should have been a routine golf tournament into an unforgettable experience for Penn senior golfer Madeleine Zang.

Up to that point, Zang had already been dealing with wind as far as the eye could see, and it was definitely a struggle for her.

“The wind was super strong,”  Zang said. “The last few holes I had missed some short putts because the wind was making me very unstable.”

Eager to swing back into action, Zang stepped up for yet another putt, but her heart sank when the putt appeared to veer off course.

“Nothing was helping,” Zang said. “I was pretty frustrated when I missed another putt.”

But Mother Nature had other plans. In a terrific stroke of luck, the wind picked up at just the right moment, gently pushing the ball backward into the hole.

“I was so surprised and couldn’t believe my luck,” Zang said. “I was super happy, and my playing competitors and I had a good laugh because of it.”

Zang’s feelings toward the incident were shared by several fans on social media. The original Instagram reel jointly posted by the Golf Channel, St. Andrews Links, and Penn women’s golf made its rounds, racking up 7.7 million views and 112,000 likes at the time of publication.

“Bugs Bunny and his magnet strike again,” one user remarked on Facebook.

“Hope you bought a lottery ticket that day,” another user on Instagram said.

Or, as Zang herself put it: “I’m an airbender.”

As Zang’s video continues to incite conversation, we can’t help but wonder when a stroke of luck might befall one of our athletes next.
