A scintillating seven-under-par 64 helped Waterford’s Seamus Power surge into contention on day two at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

The Déise man is hoping for a big weekend at the Royal Port Golf Course in Southampton, where he won back in 2022, in order to keep his PGA Tour card for next year.

He did himself no harm on Friday, ending his round on 12 under to sit one behind clubhouse leaders Kensei Hirata – who matched Power’s 64 – and American Chandler Blanchet.

Following an opening five-under-par 66 that left Power in a tie for 20th, he made his move in the morning wave on Friday with a bogey-free round.

Starting on the 10th tee, the 39-year-old played his first seven holes in one under par, with the sole birdie coming at the par-three 13th hole, his fourth of the day.

Further birdies followed on the par-five 17th and the short, closing par-four 18th, to make the turn at three-under for the day, and eight-under overall.

Further pars followed on holes one and two, before the two-time PGA Tour winner made his move on the home straight.

Pristine iron shots set up birdies at the par-three third and par-four fourth holes, before Power picked up two more shots on the sixth and ninth holes to get to 12 under par.

He was joined there by Corey Conners of Canada with play still ongoing.
