The article contains spoilers for Dark Knights of Steel II #4.

The most interesting Batman villains are the ones shrouded in mystery. There are even quite a few members of the vigilante’s rogues gallery who are only known by their alter egos, while their true names remain an enigma, such as The Joker.

Of course, the Clown Prince of Crime has been properly identified in some iterations, but the same cannot be said about one of the Dark Knight’s more physically and intellectually imposing threats. At least, that was the case until the latest issue of Dark Knights of Steel II gave Bane a name.

Dark Knights of Steel II #4 Identifies The King’s Bane

For those who may have never noticed this, never has Bane been called by his birthname in the villain’s entire history in DC Comics. However, the character’s reinterpretation in the medieval fantasy Elseworlds story, Dark Knights of Steel II, has put that streak to an end.

In the series’ fourth issue, General Amanda Waller is notified that Captain Gordon has arrived to speak to her, to which the King’s Bane assures her that he will “take care of him.” She then responds to offer him her gratitude, and calls him directly by name: Eduardo.

The true identity of the masked former Hobb Forest outlaw-turned-minion to General Waller is not such a shocking development when considering how Bane has been depicted as being of Latino descent in the main DC timeline. Not to mention, the Batman prequel TV series Gotham introduced a version of the villain who is originally known as Eduardo Torrance.

Perhaps that was the inspiration for the identity of the King’s Bane. The creators of Dark Knights of Steel II also could have named him Antonio, as a reference to Bane from 1997’s Batman & Robin, but that is a portrayal of the character most people would probably rather forget.

General Amanda Waller plays a major role in Dark Knights of Steel II, the follow-up to DC’s swords and sorcery Elseworlds comic published between 2021 and 2023. The fourth issue sees her tyrannical bid for the throne of Metropolis reach its peak with a little extra help, as explained in its official solicitation.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD TAKES AIM FOR THE THRONE! General Amanda Waller’s traitorous gambit for the throne has come to fruition, and she’s recruited a murderous squad to cut down any who dares stand in her way. Just how deep does the rot of her corruption run? And who will be left standing once she is crowned regent of the Kingdom of Metropolis at the zenith of her power?

The issue sees Prince Wayne and his allies’ attempt to prevent Waller’s usurping interrupted by this universe’s medieval interpretation of Task Force X. On top of that, the rebels also come at odds with a group of assassins trained under Ra’s Al Ghul.

Dark Knights of Steel II is penned by Tom Taylor, the Australian writer behind the comic’s predecessor, as well as the zombie apocalypse story, DCeased. The series is illustrated by Otto Schmidt, who also has a horror-centric DC Elseworlds story under his belt, namely James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg’s DC vs. Vampires.

Dark Knights of Steel II #4 is now available where comic books are sold.
