Louisville Metro Police said this year’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day was a record-breaker.

The Drug Enforcement Administration, which leads the nationwide effort, says the event aims to provide a safe and responsible way for people to dispose of their prescription drugs.

Throughout the day, LMPD collected various medications at nearly 20 locations across the city, including several Norton Healthcare, Baptist Health, Kroger and Walgreens locations, along with the Louisville Zoo and the department’s 4th Division.

Officials said Louisville’s collection effort brought in 117 boxes of prescription drugs, with a total weight of 2,204 pounds.

The department said these totals marked a record collection.
