It has been a rough season for former Hawkeye basketball star Kate Martin. Now, she faces an uncertain future in the WNBA as she is officially leaving the Unrivaled league.
Kate Martin Leaving Unrivaled
SI.com reports that news broke earlier this week that Kate Martin and the Unrivaled league agreed to a mutual contract termination. The move comes after Martin signed a multi-year extension with the three-on-three league back in August. Unrivaled has previously announced that she would be competing during the 2027 winter season.
The former Hawkeye has taken part in Unrivaled’s first two seasons, averaging 8.7 points in 2025 and 6 points in 2026, according to SI.
WNBA Future Looks Murky
Martin had a tough 2026 season in the WNBA. She was released by Golden State, a team that is currently playing in the WNBA Finals. She then spent time with the Los Angeles Sparks and the Chicago Sky, according to SI. Her inability to stick with a team doesn’t bode well for her future in the league.
Where Will Martin Play Next?
One possible reason for the mutual agreement with Unrivaled might be that Martin already has a deal to play overseas. Yahoo reports that Project B is an international league that plays during the same time as Unrivaled. Could Martin be signing with a team prior to the league tipping off in January?
One thing is for certain: whoever signs Kate Martin is going to get a smart, tenacious basketball player with plenty of game left!
