The Director-General of the National Pension Commission, Omolola Oloworaran has urged states to adopt the Contributory Pension Scheme to expedite action as it is the only way to guarantee dignity of retirees.

Oloworaran made the disclosure in Abuja over the weekend at the Pension Awards night as part of activities marking the National Pension Week.

She said, “This is our inaugural National Pensions Award, where we are celebrating excellence, innovation, coverage, and commitment to pension reform, commitment to dignity for all young Nigerians.

“Pension week has been a week-long event culminating into the leadership summit. It’s been a very serious conversation on how we can ensure dignity in retirement for all workers.

“There is also an award for the best states in the country for CPS penetration. We’ll have the most improved states and best-performing states category. And it is a call for those yet to adopt the CPS to do so as it is the only way to guarantee dignity of retirees,” she said

The PenCom DG explained that the awards “were set aside for pension fund administrators, pension fund custodians, close pension fund administrators, and also employers as well as part of efforts to drive commitment and growth in the sector.”

Oloworaran further acknowledged the role of the National Assembly in the ongoing pension Act review, adding, “Stakeholders should be ready to commit to greater pension coverage, stronger institutions, and a better life for ordinary Nigerians.”
