If there’s one singer-songwriter who truly lives up to the title of “legendary,” it would have to be Jimmy Webb. From “Wichita Lineman” to “MacArthur Park” and so many others, he’s the man behind some of the most beloved songs in music history. At 79 years old, one might expect the Grammy-winner to be slowing down…but a recently shared video proved he still has what it takes to move fans with his music.
In a clip shared to TikTok this week, Webb sat at a piano playing his 1968 classic “Didn’t We?” (originally recorded by Richard Harris and released as a B-side of “MacArthur Park”). As commenters were quick to point out, Webb played just as beautifully as ever.
“I love Jimmy, I never knew he wrote ‘Didn’t We.’ Lord!” wrote one stunned fan, with a second noting, “He puts so much emotion into this presentation.”
“Another deeply moving song from the great Jimmy Webb,” declared another person, as someone else declared, “Pure genius is he.”
As Classic Song of the Day reported, while the original version of “Didn’t We?” wasn’t as big of a hit as “Wichita Lineman” or “MacArthur Park,” the song went on to enjoy a long and successful life on the charts thanks to multiple covers from such notable artists as Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Dionne Warwick, Liza Minelli, Robert Goulet, Johnny Mathis and Diana Ross.
In a review for All Music, journalist and songwriter Matthew Green called “Didn’t We?” “home to one of Jimmy Webb’s most enduring melodies,” praising the lyrics as a “heartfelt and bittersweet reflection on the end of a relationship during its final, claustrophobic hours.”
One thing’s for sure — decades after Webb first penned the song, listeners are still in love.
