The FDA (Food and Drugs Administration), the US Federal Agency which deals with regulating foods and drugs, approved a hills that can correct presbyopia for a few hours on 31 July. In Italy it is estimated that the presbytes – the people who no longer see us closely due to age – are 28 million; Two billion would instead be in the world. But will Vizz, this is the name of the new Hollirio, will it really allow us to say goodbye to the glasses “closely”?

How does it work? Vizz’s active ingredient is aceclidine, a chemical compound that has been used in Europe since the seventies to treat glaucoma. Collirio means that the muscles of the iris contract and that the pupil restricts itself, allowing the person to focus better on the nearby objects thanks to the reduction of the depth of field.

Away the glasses … but only for a short time. Will this eye drops therefore make the reading glasses forget forever? Not really: apart from the fact that the effect is transitory (lasts a maximum of 10 hours), the ophthalmologist Jesús Téllez Vázquez explains in an article in the Spanish newspaper The vanguard that the eye drops works “as when the diaphragm closes in the camera (reducing the amount of light that enters, editor’s note), so at night or in environments with little light you could have distance vision problems and difficulty carrying out some activities, such as guiding ». The expert also emphasizes that the approval came after a single quality clinical trial, so that the experience of those who acquire and try the eye drops to judge it definitively will have to wait.

Maria Isabel Canut, president of the Catalan Societat de ophthalmology, who defines Vizz “an inaccurate and transient treatment”, because the effect begins 30 minutes after the application of the eye drops and lasts for a maximum of ten hours. Far from being a substitute for reading glasses, according to the expert Il Collirio will be an alternative to the glasses to be used occasionally for those suffering from a presbyopia at the initial stage (1-1.5 diopters) and has no other refractive defects.
