Urban Meyer is set to be honored at The Swamp during a game this fall, but he’s not yet receiving the coveted Ring of Honor designation. Instead, Meyer will be receiving a recognition from the National Football Foundation.
The NFF Hall of Fame will host an On-Campus Salute for Meyer, who served as Florida‘s coach from 2005 to 2010, winning two national titles. He will accept a Hall of Fame plaque that will stay on permanent display at Florida during the Tennessee game on Nov. 22.
The On-Campus Salute is hailed as a “hallowed tradition” by the NFF. Meyer is the 14th overall Gator and the fifth Florida coach to enter the College Football hall of Fame.
While the recognition from NFF is obviously a huge honor for Urban Meyer, many Florida fans are waiting on the school to recognize the former head coach in an even more unique way. That being the program’s Ring of Honor.
The Ring of Honor is an incredibly exclusive club, one recognized by big signage in the Swamp. Currently it has just six members: Wilber Marshall, Emmitt Smith, Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffel, Jack Youngblood and Tim Tebow.
So what is the criteria for reaching the Ring of Honor? Urban Meyer currently qualifies.
Ring of Honor Criteria to Merit Consideration
Heisman Trophy Winners (Spurrier, Wuerffel, Tebow)
Former UF All-Americans Inducted into NFL Hall of Fame for Accomplishments as Players (Youngblood)
Former UF All-Americans Who Are NFL Career Category Leaders (E. Smith – rushing)
Collegiate Career Category Leaders
Coaches with UF National Championships (Spurrier)
Coaches with at least 3 UF SEC Championships (Spurrier)
Players with 2 or more consensus All-American honors (AP, Walter Camp, Sporting News, AFCA, FWAA, UPI) who have also been named National Offensive/Defensive Players of Year (AP, Walter Camp, Sporting News, ABC, AFCA, FWAA, UPI)
In addition, the individual must have been departed from UF for at least five seasons, and he must be in good standing with the institution. Meyer certainly fits the first half of the criteria, with little reason to believe currently — despite an up-and-down tenure at Florida in terms of his players’ off-the-field activity — that he wouldn’t also meet the second.
In his six years at Florida, Urban Meyer posted an overall record of 65-15 and a SEC mark of 36-12. The program won two national titles, as well as two Southeastern Conference Championships, three SEC Eastern Division crowns and six-straight January bowl games, including three BCS bowl games.
He was named the All-American Football Foundation Coach of the Year in 2008 and his overall winning percentage of .813 ranks second all-time in program history. Also during his time in Gainesville, Gators earned 57 All-America honors and 113 All-SEC accolades. Tim Tebow also won the Heisman Trophy under Meyer in 2007.
