Josh Brolin is currently starring in Weapons, which has become the surprise box office hit of the summer.
And while the veteran actor, 57, has an impressive filmography, he feels that not every movie he’s been in was a winner.Â
Speaking to reporter Josh Horowitz in a recent interview, Brolin blasted his 2010 DC Comics blockbuster, Jonah Hex.Â
The star-studded flick featured huge names like Michael Fassbender, Megan Fox, and John Malkovich, but was savaged by critics and bombed at the box office.Â
‘I brought in a lot of people,’ Brolin explained. ‘I brought in Malkovich, I brought in Megan, I brought in Michael Shannon who was totally cut out. I brought in Fassbender.’
He added, ‘So you have this silver platter of actors and the movie doesn’t necessarily turn out as good.’
Brolin then clarified that the director’s cut of Jonah Hex was ‘pretty good,’ but that it was the studio who butchered it during post-production.
The actor also said that it’s ‘not fun’ doing the press tour for a film when it ‘sucks.’
Josh Brolin blasted his 2010 DC Comics blockbuster Jonah Hex in a new interview
This isn’t the first time that Brolin has slammed Jonah Hex.Â
In a 2023 interview with Variety, the actor bashed director Jimmy Hayward along with the studio for edits they made to the film.Â
‘I loved that [Hayward] was excited, but he just didnât have the experience and he didnât treat it like I would imagine somebody would want to treat it – to run back to their house at the end of their every day and watch tonal inspirations and [Martin] Scorsese movies or this or that,’ he said.
‘I just think we made a big mistake with the director – not to blame it all at him, because that was my choice, that was my bad choice,’ he continued.
‘And then the studio took it over and every time thatâs happened, in my experience, it has only gotten worseâĤ Thatâs what happens when you start cutting to this idea of pandering for an audience, and how testing can bite you in the a**.
‘You donât know what the audience is going to want. Jonah Hex was them taking the movie back and saying, “How can we make this the most accessible movie?” And they ended up making the least accessible movie,’ he finished.Â
Brolin and Hayward later made up, with the actor telling GQ magazine last year that the filmmaker ‘apologized for his part in the mess.’
Since then, Brolin has gone on to have a string of hits including Sicario, Deadpool 2, and the Dune films.Â

He’s currently starring in Weapons, which is the most acclaimed horror movie of the year.
The movie has already grossed close to $150 million and has sat atop the box office for the last two weeks. Â
Starring Brolin and Julia Garner, Weapons follows a group of characters in a small town where 17 children from the same classroom vanish in one night.
Not only is Weapons being praised for being terrifying, it’s also surprising viewers with an unexpected comedic twist.
‘Weapons is even more of a blast than I thought it would be. Swings so confidently between horror and comedy that it makes tonal whiplash its b***h,’ gushed one fan.
Another wrote, ‘Director Zach Cregger proves once again he’s a master of the unexpected.Â
‘#Weapons is a slow-burn ride packed with pitch-black humor, creeping dread, and an ending that goes completely off the rails – in the best way.’
