\n\tMubi has released the official trailer<\/a> for Kelly Reichardt<\/a>\u2018s new film, The Mastermind<\/a>, focusing on Josh O\u2019Connor\u2019s character JB Mooney\u2019s preparations for an art heist. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe movie is set in Massachusetts in the 1970s, where O\u2019Connor\u2019s unemployed carpenter turned amateur art thief plans his first major crime. But, per the film\u2019s logline, \u201cwhen things go haywire, his life unravels.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to O\u2019Connor, The Mastermind, which Reichardt wrote and directed, stars Alana Haim, Gaby Hoffman, John Magaro, Hope Davis and Bill Camp and will be released on Oct. 17.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe trailer begins with a shot of JB picking up a newspaper outside of his home to set the scene. He is then seen at a family dinner, where his father (Camp) points out that he has \u201ca good amount of time\u201d on his hands due to his lack of work.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cJust hear me out. It\u2019s a big life changing opportunity for me,\u201d JB tells his mother (Davis) in one clip before he\u2019s seen in an art museum. A following clip shows him exchanging money with two men in a parking lot as his conversation with his mother continues in a voiceover. \u201cBut I\u2019d have to rent a workspace and purchase tools, which I don\u2019t have,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter JB completes the heist, two men come to his home to discuss his involvement. \u201cSee, James. We\u2019ve been told that you\u2019re mixed up in this robbery,\u201d one man says before JB replies, \u201cI sure don\u2019t know how you got down this road, but you got the wrong idea. I\u2019m afraid you got some bad information.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe trailer concludes with JB meeting with two men as they seemingly prepare for a heist. However, they\u2019re interrupted when a woman asks who is in the basement with him. \u201cThe guys are here,\u201d he says before she responds, \u201cHmm. Don\u2019t forget to lock the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Mastermind premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.<\/p>\n
