{"id":102085,"date":"2025-08-22T15:20:05","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T15:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/102085\/"},"modified":"2025-08-22T15:20:05","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T15:20:05","slug":"in-praise-of-shadows-places-polycarbonate-pavilion-in-stockholm-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/102085\/","title":{"rendered":"In Praise of Shadows places polycarbonate pavilion in Stockholm park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/pavilions-tag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pavilion<\/a> by Swedish studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/in-praise-of-shadows\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In Praise of Shadows<\/a>, originally created as a companion piece for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/venice-architecture-biennale\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venice Architecture Biennale<\/a> design, has been placed in Stockholm&#8217;s Rosendal Garden.<\/p>\n<p>Now called Paviljong Rosendal, the building was originally developed as a sister pavilion to a wooden loggia, which <a href=\"https:\/\/inpraiseofshadows.se\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In Praise of Shadows<\/a> showed at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2238627 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/in-praise-of-shadows-paviljong-rosendal_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Wooden pavilion with polycarbonate walls\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Paviljong Rosendal has a translucent polycarbonate skin<\/p>\n<p>Paviljong Rosendal has been on display in the Sundbyberg suburb of Stockholm for the past two years, where it was used as a space for public dialogue during an urban planning process.<\/p>\n<p>It has now been donated by owner Folkhem, a developer that builds wooden houses, to the Rosendal Garden park in Stockholm.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2238626 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/in-praise-of-shadows-paviljong-rosendal_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Detail of Paviljong Rosendal\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>It was painted in a colour used for buildings in the area<\/p>\n<p>To align with the area&#8217;s local building traditions, In Praise of Shadows gave the pavilion a colour update, painting it in the characteristic green hue often used in the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At Rosendal, the exterior wood was painted in a locally traditional green colour to anchor it to the site,&#8221; Fredric Benesch, who co-founded In Praise of Shadows with Katarina Lundeberg, told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2238630 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/in-praise-of-shadows-paviljong-rosendal_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Paviljong Rosendal seen from a distance\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>The pavilion looks like a &#8220;glowing lantern&#8221; in winter<\/p>\n<p>While the original biennale pavilion was open to the elements, the Swedish version features a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/polycarbonate\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">polycarbonate<\/a> skin, which was necessary to protect the structure from the country&#8217;s harsh winters while bringing added privacy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The wooden structure is identical, but while the Venice pavilion was an open loggia, the Swedish version was adapted to local climate conditions with the addition of a translucent polycarbonate skin,&#8221; Benesch said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/04\/04\/in-praise-of-shadows-biorio-cinema-makeover\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/biorio-in-praise-of-shadows-arkitektur-stockholm_dezeen_2364_col_sq1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Wooden cinema salon bar\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> In Praise of Shadows gives historic Stockholm cinema a tactile makeover\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This cladding provides wind protection, extends seasonal use and creates a glowing lantern effect in winter,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>The Paviljong Rosendal pavilion was designed as a &#8220;temporary, prefabricated wooden loggia that could be reused in different contexts&#8221;, Benesch said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2238623 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/in-praise-of-shadows-paviljong-rosendal_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of wooden pavilion in Sweden\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>It will be used for meetings and events<\/p>\n<p>The studio chose to work with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/glued-laminated-timber\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">glued laminated timber<\/a> (glulam) because of the material&#8217;s practical benefits.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Working with wood was part of the brief,&#8221; Benesch said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Glulam was chosen for its strength, prefabrication potential, and reusability.
