{"id":102483,"date":"2025-08-22T19:06:06","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T19:06:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/102483\/"},"modified":"2025-08-22T19:06:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T19:06:06","slug":"hiawatha-golf-course-neighbors-plagued-by-errant-balls-stake-hopes-for-relief-on-major-redesign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/102483\/","title":{"rendered":"Hiawatha Golf Course neighbors plagued by errant balls stake hopes for relief on major redesign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rt-Text\">The ongoing redesign aims to satisfy many constituencies of park users with different desires for limited parkland, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/minneapolis-park-board-panel-moves-toward-decision-on-long-stalled-hiawatha-golf-course-redesign\/600199222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/minneapolis-park-board-panel-moves-toward-decision-on-long-stalled-hiawatha-golf-course-redesign\/600199222\">Black golfers<\/a> who want to see the history of racial integration enshrined there, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/indigenous-environmental-advocates-weigh-in-on-future-of-hiawatha-golf\/600196069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/indigenous-environmental-advocates-weigh-in-on-future-of-hiawatha-golf\/600196069\">American Indian environmental activists<\/a> who want to clean up the lake formerly known as Bde Psin, trail walkers who revile the fence that prevents them from enjoying the lakeside and those who want to see the land used for more sports than golf. <\/p>\n<p class=\"rt-Text\">The neighbors hope that redesign process will bring relief from unwanted golf balls. But they\u2019re worried their feedback won\u2019t resonate with park officials, some of whom have tried to help and others who have been reluctant to believe the extent that badly placed shots are interfering with neighbors\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt-Text\">Emails show that during the 2023 season, former Park Board golf director Larry Umphrey moved the tees at the fourth hole farther away from the houses, which essentially took care of the neighbors\u2019 problem. But after a while, unhappy golfers moved the tees back to their original positions, Umphrey left the Park Board and the errant balls resumed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"rt-Text\">Park Board staff declined to answer why attempts to redesign play at the fourth hole ended after that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt-Text\">\u201cThey bought the house next to it,\u201d Park Board lawyer Brian Rice told the Minnesota Star Tribune. \u201cIt\u2019s an existing condition. That\u2019s like saying I bought a house on the freeway, and then all sudden, I don\u2019t like the noise. Well, okay, you bought it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rt-Text\">Rice\u2019s firm sent neighbors a letter last season, stating: \u201cThe MPRB is not liable for errant golf balls; the golfer who hit the errant ball is at fault.
