From New York, Pennsylvania, to Wisconsin, social media users snapped shocking shots of deer with wart-like blisters all over their heads, necks, and legs. The sight of these mutant deer is clearly disturbing, and quite frankly, is scaring people to their bones. Is it a new plague in the wildlife community?

What’s happening?

Over the past few months, scary snapshots of wildlife have dominated social media: rabbits with antler-like growths, hairless squirrels covered in oozing tumors, and now deer sporting wart-like ‘flesh bubbles’. From backyard cameras in Pennsylvania to wooded trails in Wisconsin, these “mutant deer” images began circulating widely on various social media platforms. These unsettling images are prompting many to wonder: Is a mutant animal outbreak underway? So, what’s really happening?Although the images circulating on social media were enough to alarm people into believing that something was really wrong in the wildlife community, wildlife authorities and wildlife-health experts have quickly reassured the public. As per the experts, these odd growths are known as cutaneous fibromas, more commonly, ‘deer warts’, and they are caused by a species-specific papillomavirus.

What are the ‘flesh bubbles’ for?

These wart-like tumors (cutaneous fibromas) are most often found on the head, neck, legs, and occasionally across other parts of the deer’s body. The size can range from tiny pea-like nodules to huge lumps resembling small grapefruits or even footballs.Experts from agencies such as the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and Cornell University’s Wildlife Health Lab explain that the virus typically spreads through biting insects like mosquitoes and ticks, especially during late summer and early fall when these pests are most active. Deer sharing feeding grounds, bedding spots, or rubbing posts further catalyze the transmission.Despite appearances that might seem ‘mutant’, most deer, as science says, handle these growths well. Their immune systems typically shrink and eventually eliminate the fibromas within a few months. Only in rare cases, when the lumps obstruct vision, eating, or mobility, do wildlife officials intervene or consider euthanasia. Can humans or pets be affected by the same?To everyone’s relief, no, they can’t; they only affect deer and cannot jump to humans or pets.

What’s next?

As social media has been flooded with photos of ‘mutant deer’, it’s only natural to ask: Has there been an actual surge in cases? According to authorities in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, no significant spike has been detected. Reports of fibromas are relatively common and tend to increase during hunting season and the rut (mating season). What’s new is more frequent documentation, thanks to trail cameras, smartphones, and social media. However, scientists also suggest that climate change could be a contributing factor. Warmer temperatures allow biting insects to thrive longer and in wider regions, potentially resulting in more cases of deer fibromas becoming visible and widespread. This phenomenon follows a wave of similar weird wildlife sightings across the US, from cottontail rabbits growing tentacle-like ‘horns’ to ‘zombie squirrels’ covered in pus-filled boils.
