Dacnis\/Reddit<\/p>\n<p>Despite being grotesque-looking, the golf ball-sized warts \u2014 officially known as \u201cfibromas\u201d \u2014 are just non-cancerous tumors, <a href=\"https:\/\/deerassociation.com\/5-things-deer-hunters-should-know-about-deer-warts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to wildlife officials<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The warts, which can spread from deer to deer, most often grow on the animal\u2019s head and neck but rarely affect overall health.<\/p>\n<p>The freaky photos started going viral after <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/17\/us-news\/zombie-squirrels-covered-in-oozing-warts-spotted-sulking-through-us-backyards\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sightings of \u201czombie squirrels\u201d<\/a> and \u201cFrankenstein rabbits\u201d stoked concerns about possible plague outbreaks across the country. <\/p>\n<p>The golf ball-sized warts \u2014 officially known as \u201cfibromas\u201d \u2014 are just non-cancerous tumors, experts say. Matt Harbin \/ Washington department of Fish and Wildlife<\/p>\n<p>Reports of cottontail rabbits sporting black, tentacle-like growths out of their heads in Colorado, Minnesota and Nebraska recently prompted warnings to steer clear of the mutated animals.<\/p>\n<p>The unsettling deformities are the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/13\/science\/frankenstein-bunnies-with-head-spikes-invade-us\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">result of cottontail papilloma virus<\/a>\u00a0(CRPV) \u2014 a bug that spreads when mosquitoes, ticks, or fleas bite infected bunnies and then pass it along to others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Days later, squirrels covered in pus-filled boils were reportedly spotted skulking through parts of Maine. <\/p>\n<p>The warts, which can spread from deer to deer, most often grow on the animal\u2019s head and neck. Alamy Stock Photo<\/p>\n<p>While some were quick to dub the critters \u201czombie squirrels,\u201d wildlife experts said it was likely the result of squirrel fibromatosis \u2014 a viral skin disease caused by leporipoxvirus.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its scary look, a Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife official recently told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2025\/05\/15\/homestead\/squirrel-pox-maine-joam40zk0w\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the Bangor Daily News<\/a>\u00a0that residents do not need to fear the squirrels because they pose no threat to humans, pets or birds. \u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Oh deer!
