Public participation, he agrees, is fundamental to ensuring that such interventions are successful, and he points to the Brazilian government&#8217;s (Periphery Life programme), which includes a participatory action plan as a mandatory element for such interventions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Vila Nova Esperan\u00e7a&#8217;s project has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/355205165_Bioconnections_as_Enablers_of_Regenerative_Circularity_for_the_Built_Environment\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">received<\/a> recognition <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uol.com.br\/ecoa\/reportagens-especiais\/como-comunidade-na-zona-oeste-de-sp-virou-exemplo-de-bairro-sustentavel\/#page1\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">across Brazil<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20200310-green-favela-fights-to-live-sustainably-in-brazil\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">globally<\/a>. In 2014 it was awarded the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saopaulo.sp.leg.br\/apartes-anteriores\/revista-apartes\/numero-8-junho-julho2014\/palmas-para-a-cidadania\/\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Milton Santos prize for social development<\/a> by the municipality of S\u00e3o Paulo. Following this recognition, much of the community has now been given formal water, sewerage and electricity connection and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/maismsnoticias.com\/noticia\/25632\/prefeitura-avanca-com-obras-de-asfalto-e-drenagem-em-ruas-da-vila-nova-esperanca\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">asphalt roads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Still, a battle against eviction in the community has been <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saopaulo.sp.leg.br\/blog\/permanencia-de-comunidade-na-vila-nova-esperanca-e-tema-de-audiencia-da-comissao-de-politica-urbana\/\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ongoing for several years<\/a>. In 2011, things came to a head when armed men showed up to forcibly remove families, although it is not clear who they were working on behalf of. The residents resisted, although over 100 families agreed to leave following the ordeal. But most Vila Nova Esperan\u00e7a residents remained and in 2012, a judge ruled in their favour and determined they could stay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Motivated by this ruling, they moved forward with the garden and in 2013 began cultivating carrots, lettuce, beetroot and dozens of other fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs. Anyone is welcome to volunteer, receiving harvested food in return.
