MANCHESTER, N.H. (WMUR) – A food canning hobby has gotten one New Hampshire man into a pickle.<\/p>\n
Daniel Mowery has been giving away his homemade goods for decades, but city officials now say he\u2019s breaking the law.<\/p>\n
Mowery\u2019s goods include jellies, tomatoes and bread and butter pickles. He cans it all and pays for supplies himself.<\/p>\n
Then he gives it all away for free.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were brought up poor, so our family always canned. Everything came out of the garden, and that\u2019s the way it was,\u201d Mowery said.<\/p>\n
The Manchester Health Department sent Mowery a cease-and-desist letter last week.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not worthy to put on TV, put it that way. I was not happy,\u201d Mowery said.<\/p>\n
It said he needs a permit to keep canning and distributing food, and his kitchen needs to be commercially licensed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is one of the issues that I believe that all people from all parties, all walks of life can agree on. And it\u2019s pretty common sense that we should allow this to go on,\u201d Manchester Alderman Joseph Kelly Levasseur said.<\/p>\n
State law lets anyone sell homemade food with certain requirements, but the city health department said it has its own ordinance on food safety.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we don\u2019t change the law, then he\u2019ll be facing fines and violations, and he\u2019ll get a cease-and-desist order again. I don\u2019t think it will stop,\u201d Levasseur said. <\/p>\n
Mowery said he\u2019s not stopping. <\/p>\n
For him, canning is more than a decades-long hobby. It\u2019s hard work and tradition that he has no plans to put a lid on.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor the city of Manchester … we\u2019ll see you at the aldermen meeting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Manchester mayor\u2019s office declined to comment on Mowery\u2019s situation.<\/p>\n
