\n\tDaniel Dae Kim<\/a> called out the \u201cchilling effect\u201d on free speech and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an Associated Press interview<\/a> conducted in Seoul, South Korea, the Tony nominee was asked if he\u2019s worried about backlash against DEI efforts in the entertainment industry.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re already seeing it,\u201d the Butterfly actor and executive producer said. \u201cIf you look at what happened with Paramount and CBS News, we\u2019re seeing a chilling effect on free speech and journalism and DEI. \u2018DEI\u2019 is a bad word these days, but to me, DEI\u2019s not a fad. The idea of inclusion is not something that\u2019s a political trend. It\u2019s my life. It\u2019s what I\u2019ve lived every decade I\u2019ve been in this business.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tKim is referring to the $16 million settlement reached between Paramount and president Donald Trump over a contested 60 Minutes interview with former vice president Kamala Harris, which the GOP leader had claimed was fraudulently edited. At the time of the $20 billion lawsuit filing, the media conglomerate deemed the move \u201cmeritless.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing the settlement\u2019s announcement, late-night host Stephen Colbert, whose show is televised on Paramount\u2019s CBS, called the decision a \u201cbig fat bribe\u201d amid the looming and long-gestating Paramount-Skydance merger. Just days later, he announced to audiences that his show \u2014 and The Late Show franchise as a whole, which began with David Letterman \u2014 would be cancelled next year. Amid speculation from viewers, Congress members and fellow industry peers, Paramount defended the decision as purely financially motivated. <\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere in the Q&A with the AP, the Lost alum noted, \u201cI have a lot of sympathy for actors who take stereotypical roles when they\u2019re starting out because you need some way to break into the business. It\u2019s much easier once you\u2019re more successful and more established because you have more financial stability. It\u2019s something that, if you\u2019re not a person of color, or someone who\u2019s a minority in the United States, you don\u2019t have to think about. You don\u2019t think about what this role means for the rest of a nation or an ethnicity. You just do what you\u2019re drawn to, and that\u2019s very liberating. I am lucky enough now where I can also make those same choices.
