When rivers run low, the Elbe\u2019s stones reappear\u2014none more famous than the slab at D\u011b\u010d\u00edn bearing the inscription \u201cWenn du mich siehst, dann weine\u201d (\u201cIf you see me, weep\u201d). Researchers note that while the earliest legible year on that stone is 1616, traces of even earlier droughts (including 1417 and 1473) and a string of later years into the 19th century are recorded.\u00b9<\/p>\n

Warnings From The Past<\/p>\n

The stones last made headlines in 2018, when an intense European drought exposed more than a dozen along the Elbe.\u00b2 Experts later cautioned that conditions unfolding in 2022 could prove even worse<\/a> than 2018\u2014possibly the most severe in 500 years, according to the European Commission\u2019s Joint Research Centre (JRC).\u00b3<\/p>\n

Recent droughts in Europe once again made visible the \u201cHunger Stones\u201d in some Czech and German rivers. These stones were used to mark desperately low river levels that would forecast famines. For communities along the Elbe centuries ago, hunger stones marked seasons of failed harvests and scarcity. Their recurrence today carries a broader message. During the 2022 crisis, the European Drought Observatory reported roughly 47% of Europe under drought warning (soil-moisture deficit) and 17% under alert (vegetation stress)\u2014a near-continent-wide signal to build climate resilience<\/a>.\u2075<\/p>\n

So when we read \u201cIf you see me, weep,\u201d it\u2019s no longer a relic from another era. It\u2019s a reminder that without sustained action\u2014from water efficiency and drought planning to resilient farming\u2014those carved warnings will keep returning.<\/p>\n
