{"id":107875,"date":"2025-08-25T02:42:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T02:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/107875\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T02:42:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T02:42:10","slug":"with-retaliatory-tariffs-removed-a-look-at-items-that-will-be-cheaper-for-canadians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/107875\/","title":{"rendered":"With retaliatory tariffs removed, a look at items that will be cheaper for Canadians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new chapter in the trade dispute with the United States opened this week when Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that retaliatory tariffs on some U.S. exports included in the existing Canada-U.S. trade deal would be rescinded.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is a positive step because we had the U.S. ambassador last week saying this was a major impediment to making any progress \u2026 that Canada had retaliatory tariffs on some goods that were actually covered under the existing trade agreement,\u201d financial analyst Michael Campbell told Global News.<\/p>\n<p>He broke down some items that will be cheaper for Canadians now that the tariffs have been removed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s orange juice, peanut butter, craft beer, ketchup, coffee pods, refrigerators, washing machines, microwaves, lawn mowers \u2026 denim jeans, running shoes, bicycles, lipstick, other cosmetics, toothpaste, paper towels, bed sheets; all of those will at least ease some price pressures on individuals and the businesses in Canada selling them,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Carney said Friday that Canada will lift many of its retaliatory\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/donald-trump-tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a> on U.S. goods that fall under free trade rules, after agreeing with President Donald Trump to \u201cintensify\u201d stalled trade talks.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian counter-tariffs on American autos, steel and aluminum will remain for now, Carney said, describing the move as a bid to \u201cmatch\u201d Trump\u2019s tariffs on Canada. The change will take effect starting next week, the prime minister said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanadian Federation of Independent Business was the latest to come in and say, \u2018Look what\u2019s happening to small and medium-sized businesses,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifty-eight per cent of small businesses said they were hurt by our retaliatory tariffs. Sixty-seven per cent said they paid the full tariffs on U.S. imports themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s the thing that\u2019s really discouraging: 38 per cent said they would close if the tariff dispute lasts for a year. Nineteen per cent (said they\u2019re) not even going to make it six months.
