{"id":108047,"date":"2025-08-25T04:27:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T04:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/108047\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T04:27:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T04:27:09","slug":"defending-champ-aryna-sabalenka-wins-1st-round-us-open-match","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/108047\/","title":{"rendered":"Defending champ Aryna Sabalenka wins 1st-round US Open match"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Aug 24, 2025, 04:58 PM ET<\/p>\n<p>NEW YORK &#8212; Defending champion <a data-player-guid=\"c91d133a-526a-ea8d-654c-7ef6915ad63b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3038\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aryna Sabalenka<\/a> moved into the second round of the US Open on Sunday after weathering a challenging first set in her first match.<\/p>\n<p>The No. 1-ranked player took down Swiss player <a data-player-guid=\"1974ca83-b187-9eeb-8480-5d3b758db3d3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2984\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rebeka Masarova<\/a> 7-5, 6-1, but it wasn&#8217;t without struggle. Sabalenka went down a break early in the first set, keeping the two neck-and-neck until the defending champion was able to pull away from their 5-5 deadlock.<\/p>\n<p>Sabalenka then dominated the second set, dropping only one game en route to her eventual victory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel like I didn&#8217;t start my best in the first games, but then I found my rhythm,&#8221; she said after the win. &#8220;Happy with the level I played today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/p>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<p>She credited the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium for helping her make it through that tight first set.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I won that set point and you were cheering me up, I had goosebumps while I was sitting,&#8221; Sabalenka said on the court. &#8220;Your support means a lot to me, and thank you so much.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Since the start of 2023, Sabalenka has won 59 major matches to lead all women. She is bidding to become the first woman to successfully defend her US Open title since <a data-player-guid=\"cc4fbfff-5162-cb94-e0aa-500d3227a300\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=394\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Serena Williams<\/a> in 2014. This run of 10 straight US Opens without a back-to-back champion on the women&#8217;s side is the longest since the tournament eliminated the challenge round in 1912.<\/p>\n<p>The three-time Slam champion has gone through three of this year&#8217;s four Grand Slams without a title.<\/p>\n<p>Sabalenka will next face <a data-player-guid=\"c9ba38ce-6df7-3b07-b32b-74801479012b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=6413\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Polina Kudermetova<\/a>, who became the first player to advance at this year&#8217;s tournament when her opponent <a data-player-guid=\"cd4140e6-fb34-31f7-83d0-f5af5076bba5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=4166\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nuria Parrizas Diaz<\/a> retired after only four games.<\/p>\n<p>Sabalenka defeated Kudermetova in their most recent matchup in Dubai in February.<\/p>\n<p>In other women&#8217;s singles results Sunday, <a data-player-guid=\"c2f9c887-6d8a-3269-9b7a-984e7e4db646\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=16914\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Janice Tjen<\/a> took down No. 24 seed <a data-player-guid=\"b8f889c7-5262-860c-e171-68933e5ee941\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2665\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Veronika Kudermetova<\/a> 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to become the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/46066361\/janice-tjen-upsets-veronika-kudermetova-us-open-becomes-first-indonesian-player-win-major-match-2003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">first Indonesian player to win a major match<\/a> since <a data-player-guid=\"4073f027-4b44-c146-0588-8ad6f492e203\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=676\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Angelique Widjaja<\/a> at Wimbledon in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>(1) Sabalenka def.
