Before the storm, he\u2019d taken cuttings\u00a0from Peggy and got her roses to root. \u201cThen, all of a sudden, Katrina comes along, and it becomes apparent that this rose is even more remarkable than he thought,\u201d says King.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Welch named the rose after Peggy, and sales of its cuttings and offspring went toward a Garden Club of America\u00a0restoration fund for gardens that were ruined in the hurricane. It was later recognized by the horticulture industry as a <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lsuagcenter.com\/articles\/page1678976803142\" target=\"_blank\" dir=\"ltr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Louisiana Super Plant<\/a> for its ability to survive harsh conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The combination of its hardiness, its mysterious provenance, and Peggy\u2019s story made it a sought after flower among gardeners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cI can point you to a number of fantastic roses, and people don&#8217;t beat the door down for the other roses like they do for this one,\u201d says King. \u201cIt&#8217;s impossible not to think of [Peggy], and all those people who lost so much, and yet they came through it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Despite the rose\u2019s incredible resilience, not much formal scientific testing has been done.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Renowned rose expert William Welch from Texas A&amp;M University\u00a0was\u00a0already aware of\u2014and impressed by\u2014the rose.
