And we\u2019re not going to let it happen anymore. We\u2019re not going to take it,\u201d the president told reporters at the White House Aug. 11.<\/p>\n<p>At an Oval Office press conference Monday, Vice President JD Vance said the federalization of the city\u2019s police force has already saved lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis town averaged 1 murder every other day for the last 20-30 years, which means in two short weeks the president and his team have saved six or seven lives, people who would have been killed on the streets of DC,\u201d said Vance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Those people] are now living, breathing, spending time with their families because the president had the willpower to say no more, we\u2019re not going to give\u00a0the\u00a0streets of DC over to vagrants and robbers and murderers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/13\/us-news\/dea-head-says-phone-calls-are-coming-from-all-over-the-country-from-fed-agents-wanting-to-help-in-dc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Drug Enforcement Administration head Terry Cole<\/a>, who was tapped by Trump to be the temporary leader of the MPD during the\u00a030-day federal takeover dubbed \u201cLiberation Day,\u201d\u00a0said there\u2019s been an instant morale boost at the department since the president gave the order.<\/p>\n<p>The District of Columbia has gone 12 days without a single murder following President Trump\u2019s federal takeover of DC police. They feel the ability to go out and be law enforcement officers,\u201d he said from the Oval Office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey feel they\u2019re connected to their communities again, they\u2019re making a difference. Thanks to you, Mr. President, and our federal task force, you are making DC safe once again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeanine Pirro, the former judge, prosecutor and Fox News host who has served as the US attorney for the District of Columbia since May, touted the string of murder-free days as a direct result of the Trump administration\u2019s new enforcement regime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe deterrent effect of all that\u2019s going on as a result of the president\u2019s move to make DC safe and beautiful is literally changing the safety landscape of Washington. This president is making a difference,\u201d she said on X, pledging the suspects will be tried and convicted.<\/p>\n<p>FBI Director Kash Patel took to social media to herald the results of the crackdown\u2019s early days, announcing federal law enforcement partners have so far notched over 1,000 arrests under the federal takeover.<\/p>\n<p>The DC Police Union has been posting regular updates about the significant drop in crime in the capital since Trump\u2019s historic announcement.<\/p>\n<p>In an X post Monday, the union said in the last 14 days total crime is down 11% citywide, with sharp reductions across the board including robberies (-42%), assaults with a deadly weapon (-13%), carjacking (-85%), car theft (-24%), violent crime (-25%) and property crime (-10%).<\/p>\n<p>Members of the Metropolitan Police stand guard as demonstrators participate in a protest. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Washington\u2019s murder rate is one of the highest in the country for major cities \u2014 with 27 homicides per 100,000 residents in 2024 \u2014 though murders dropped by 30% from a year prior, according to an analysis from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rit.edu\/liberalarts\/sites\/rit.edu.liberalarts\/files\/docs\/CPSI%20Working%20Papers\/2025-02_CPSI%20Working%20Paper_US%20City%20Homicide%20Stats.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a0the Rochester Insitute of Technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, Chicago has a murder rate of 21.7 per 100,000. In Los Angeles the rate was 7.1, and in New York City it was 4.7.<\/p>\n<p>Trump next has his sights set on surging federal law enforcement resources to other crime-blighted US cities, including New York and Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople in Chicago \u2026 are screaming for us to come.
