Sells Oldenburg and Van Bruggen &#8216;Plantoir&#8217; Sculpture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPeople Inc. recently sold a large sculpture in the shape of a garden trowel by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/claes-oldenburg\/\" id=\"auto-tag_claes-oldenburg\" data-tag=\"claes-oldenburg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Claes Oldenburg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/coosje-van-bruggen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_coosje-van-bruggen\" data-tag=\"coosje-van-bruggen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coosje van Bruggen<\/a>, which became a landmark in Des Moines, Iowa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe media company, formerly known as Dotdash Meredith, announced the sale of the 23-foot-tall sculpture Plantoir (2001) on August 22 but did not disclose the name of the buyer, where it will be relocated, or the price paid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe recently finalized the sale of the Plantoir, the art installation situated near the campus entrance,\u201d said a statement issued by People Inc to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/money\/business\/2025\/08\/22\/des-moines-plantoir-statue-sold-people-inc-dotdash-meredith-western-gateway\/85780340007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Des Moines Register, which first reported the news of the sale<\/a>. \u201cThe sale was completed with an out-of-state buyer that made a significant offer for the piece. We agreed to the sale only after offering the piece to local organizations. The Plantoir will likely be moved to the new owner before the end of September.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Articles<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-2.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-2.jpg\" alt=\"The Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen, Denmark, 2013.\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe 2,300-pound aluminum, fiber-reinforced plastic and steel sculpture was designed by the couple to withstand wind speeds of up to 120 miles per hour, and has been recognized as the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldrecordacademy.org\/2023\/6\/worlds-largest-garden-trowel-sculpture-world-record-in-des-moines-iowa-423249\" target=\"_blank\">World\u2019s Largest Garden Trowel Sculpture<\/a> by the World Record Academy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPlantoir was installed on the former campus of Meredith Corp. in the city\u2019s downtown in 2002, after the publishing company bought it to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Better Homes and Gardens. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBefore its purchase by Meredith Corp., Plantoir was also exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art\u2019s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden in Manhattan in 2002, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/dsmpublicartfoundation.org\/public-artwork\/plantoir\/\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPeople Inc. declined to tell the Des Moines Register which local organizations had been offered the chance to purchase Plantoir.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe bright red trowel sculpture was also the second <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/public-art\/\" id=\"auto-tag_public-art\" data-tag=\"public-art\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">public art<\/a> piece designed by Oldenburg and van Bruggen installed in Des Moines. The first one was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/dsmpublicartfoundation.org\/public-artwork\/crusoe-umbrella\/\" target=\"_blank\">Crusoe Umbrella<\/a>, a large steel and polyurethane enamel sculpture commissioned by the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines and installed in 1979.]<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnother version of Plantoir is currently installed in the gardens of the Serralves Foundation, in Porto, Portugal.
