Nonetheless, the 2024 semi-finalist battled through at Flushing Meadows.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth seed clawed past Argentine qualifier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/players\/federico-agustin-gomez\/gj16\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Federico Agustin Gomez<\/a> 6-4, 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-2 for a place in the second round. Despite letting slip a match point in the third-set tie-break, this year\u2019s Indian Wells champion rebounded with a clean performance in the fourth set to advance after three hours and one minute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dUnbelievable to be out here in New York, playing on Louis Armstrong. The big-serving lefty averaged just less than 110 miles per hour on his first serve Monday, but it was enough to navigate past Gomez.<\/p>\n<p>The Argentine saved one match point on his own serve in the third-set tie-break, blistering a forehand, one of 50 winners he hit in the match. Draper broke early in the fourth set and did not relinquish his advantage. <\/p>\n<p>The 23-year-old\u2019s next opponent, Bergs, eased past <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/players\/chun-hsin-tseng\/t0ap\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chun-Hsin Tseng<\/a> 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 earlier in the day. The Briton leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head series 1-0, a victory in the first round of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/tournaments\/wimbledon\/540\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wimbledon<\/a> in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Draper earned his biggest major breakthrough at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/tournaments\/us-open\/560\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Open<\/a> last year, when he was No. 25 in the PIF ATP Rankings. Now World No. 5, he is back for more in New York and will next take on Belgian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/players\/zizou-bergs\/bu13\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zizou Bergs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not putting too much expectations on myself. I feel like I\u2019ve put in the work. I know that if I can get that level back, I\u2019m going to be really tough to beat,\u201d Draper said. \u201cObviously there are so many amazing players in this draw, but the main thing is I\u2019m just so happy to be able to compete here in front of you guys in New York.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/news\/it-all-adds-up-hub\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"It All Adds Up\" style=\"width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1756200427_122_it-all-adds-up-banner.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In other early action Monday, #NextGenATP star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/players\/joao-fonseca\/f0fv\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joao Fonseca<\/a> hit 51 winners in a 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 6-3 triumph against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/players\/miomir-kecmanovic\/ki95\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Miomir Kecmanovic<\/a>, this year\u2019s Delray Beach titlist.<\/p>\n<p>Fonseca has thrived at the majors in 2025, upsetting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/players\/andrey-rublev\/re44\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrey Rublev<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/tournaments\/australian-open\/580\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Open<\/a> as a qualifier before making the third round at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/tournaments\/roland-garros\/520\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roland Garros<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/tournaments\/wimbledon\/540\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wimbledon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cFirst round is always a little bit more tense,\u201d said Fonseca in his post-match press conference. \u201cIn the beginning of the match, he got an early break, but I got it back and in the tie-break I played really well and increased my level. I think the most important thing today was that I played well in the important points. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cWhen they came, I increased my level, so that\u2019s really positive today. The mentality of staying positive and focusing on the next point, that was really important.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>One year ago, Fonseca was World No. 162 when he lost in qualifying at Flushing Meadows.
