Now, that cultural smorgasbord includes a new and perhaps surprising offering: <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/sport\/tennis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tennis<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghb00023b6njecgucs2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Surprising, at least, for those only just noticing the recent glut of tennis talent to emerge from the southern European nation. In the men\u2019s game, Italy has nine players ranked inside the top 100 and five in the top 50, including the all-conquering <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2025\/07\/24\/sport\/jannik-sinner-reappoints-fitness-coach-doping-suspension-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jannik Sinner<\/a> \u2013 a four-time grand slam champion and the world No. 1 since June last year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghb00033b6nox6ci38s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Given the country\u2019s modest history in the sport, this is truly a golden age for Italian tennis, one which has vaulted to even greater heights thanks to Sinner\u2019s success on the court and popularity off it.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-2230501268.jpg\" alt=\"Sinner lunges for a ball at the Cincinnati Open on August 16.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1067\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghb00043b6nfb18201d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are now particularly spoiled,\u201d Ubaldo Scanagatta, a veteran journalist from Italy and founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubitennis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ubitennis<\/a> website, tells <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/sport\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNN Sports<\/a> about his country\u2019s tennis boom. \u201cSinner is the top athlete, the top sportsman in Italy \u2026 He\u2019s already an idol.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghb00053b6nheein4bs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scanagatta has been involved in tennis for decades. He has covered nearly 180 grand slams, including 51 Wimbledons and 50 French Opens, but never has he seen the sport as popular as it is now.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc00063b6ny55xth03@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Soccer has traditionally dominated the sporting landscape in Italy, and that seems unlikely to change anytime soon. But failure to qualify for the last World Cup, coupled with a lack global superstars \u2013 \u201cwe don\u2019t have (Lionel) Messi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/12\/sport\/soccer-cristiano-ronaldo-georgina-rodriguez-engagement-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">(Cristiano) Ronaldo<\/a>, (Kylian) Mbapp\u00e9, or some of the players who play in the Premier League,\u201d says Scanagatta \u2013 has created greater room for tennis to flourish.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc00073b6nd6872abn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe never had the front page of (sports outlet) Gazzetta dello Sport showing tennis, and now tennis is every day in all papers, whatever Sinner does,\u201d Scanagatta adds. \u201cI had last year 70 million (site) visits, which for tennis is huge. I mean, when I started the blog first and then the website, I was happy when I was doing, I don\u2019t know, 1,000 a day.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc00083b6n0s4i1ggn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tennis\u2019 explosion, however, is down to more than just Sinner, more than just soccer\u2019s waning influence. The national federation has for years been implementing plans to turn Italy into a powerhouse of the sport.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc00093b6ny9mzc3vx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among the most consequential changes was a move to support private teams and private coaches, rather than just those who had been cherry-picked by the federation. As a result, the best resources become available to the best players, regardless of where they are based and by whom they are coached.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-2218451166.jpg\" alt=\"Lorenzo Musetti plays a forehand against Frances Tiafoe during this year's French Open.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3033\" width=\"4648\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000a3b6nfd1kpnaw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That includes some of the most successful players to emerge from Italy in recent times: Sinner, world No. 10 Lorenzo Musetti, and former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000b3b6nb54eo4j4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNow, the federation helps the players who do well,\u201d says Scanagatta. \u201cThey can host them in the national tennis center if they want to practice. And if they need a physio, if they need the doctor, if they need the nutritionist \u2013 they find everything.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000c3b6n2pms0orx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One man who has witnessed first-hand Italy\u2019s changing approach to player development is leading strategy coach <a href=\"https:\/\/braingametennis.com\/craig-oshannessy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Craig O\u2019Shannessy<\/a>. A former member of Novak Djokovic\u2019s coaching team, O\u2019Shannessy has been working as a consultant with the Italian federation since 2016, while also helping Berrettini to climb inside the top 10 in the world rankings.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000d3b6nogc569p3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cItaly is way ahead of the game,\u201d he tells CNN Sports about the country\u2019s tennis drive. \u201cThey went all in, and in a very serious way \u2026 What they\u2019ve done today was a vision 10 years ago.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000e3b6n3oh5k5ao@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            O\u2019Shannessy is one of several overseas specialists hired by the federation to improve the standards of tennis coaching across the country through symposiums and workshops. His focus has been on strategy and patterns of play, using data analytics to tailor-make training sessions for each player.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000f3b6nhujxiwz1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMy philosophy was very much about getting these young Italian kids to play and teach them while they\u2019re playing, rather than just: \u2018We\u2019re doing drills today,\u2019\u201d says O\u2019Shannessy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000g3b6n641w3jx5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI wanted to diminish that style of coaching and get them to play where the coaches would see very easily what the strengths and weaknesses of these players are. Then you could do more bespoke coaching to these players instead of a cookie-cutter approach.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000h3b6nkc6kek75@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI get so many Italian coaches come up and go: \u2018Thank you, Craig, you changed the way that I coach,\u2019\u201d he adds. \u201c\u2018Before I would just feed balls and who knows who\u2019s getting better. But now I have a purpose. You\u2019ve given us analytics, you\u2019ve given us the drills, you\u2019ve given us benchmarks, and we get success,\u2019 and everyone is just so much happier.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000i3b6n6kycbipd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As well as a coaching revolution, up-and-coming Italian players also benefit from easy access to tournaments.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000j3b6nugiep9cx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenniseurope.org\/file\/917268\/?dl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a> from Tennis Europe noted that the country hosts 148 international competitions, accounting for eight percent of events across the continent \u2013 second only to Spain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000k3b6nacjbagcr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to Scanagatta, there are also \u201cat least four or five important junior tournaments\u201d which are popular among fans \u2013 \u201cspectators like to become a sort of talent scout,\u201d he adds \u2013 but cheaper to run than top-level events.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000l3b6nhz3s8bvr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More crucially, these tournaments are also instrumental in developing young players. Italy had 249 professionally ranked male and female players by the end of 2021, per Tennis Europe \u2013 second behind France\u2019s 271.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000n3b6ngnb8ys9r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are organizing more tennis than anybody else, and that helps a lot because the Italian players, they can play at home,\u201d says Scanagatta. \u201cThey don\u2019t have to spend a lot of money to go around the world, while (for instance) the South Americans, they have to leave South America in January, and they stay away for eight months or even more.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000o3b6nbnlnfhzr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Having so many tournaments enables organizers to give wild card entries to young, homegrown players. That allows promising juniors to measure themselves against more experienced players and, if successful, accrue more rankings points. In turn, more ranking points helps a player gain entry to more prestigious tournaments.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-2183844872.jpg\" alt=\"Turin will once again host this year's ATP Finals.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"900\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000p3b6nfc1y1imb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This plethora of lower-level events compensates for Italy not hosting one of the four grand slams, which provide a huge boost for a country\u2019s tennis economy. And in the absence of a grand slam, Turin will host a fifth ATP Finals \u2013 the season-ending tournament in the men\u2019s game \u2013 later this year, while the annual Italian Open in Rome is one of the world\u2019s most iconic clay-court competitions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000q3b6nm7ekfjks@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As for broadcasting matches, all Italian households have free access to SuperTennis, a TV channel managed by the national federation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000s3b6nw7bleuz0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            SuperTennis has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supertennis.tv\/News\/Slam\/us-open-supertennis-accordo-fino-2030-comunicato\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">exclusive rights to the US Open<\/a> in Italy up to 2030, plus limited rights to Wimbledon. Davis Cup and selected ATP and WTA Tour events are also aired on the network, making the sport easily viewable for fans at home.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000t3b6nu7lnoez4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Historically, success for Italian tennis has been sporadic. Before Sinner, Adriano Panatta was the only man in the Open Era to win a grand slam, doing so at the 1976 French Open, while no player had reached the top of the rankings.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000u3b6nucmrh59o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On the women\u2019s side, Francesca Schiavone became the first singles major winner at the 2010 French Open, followed by Flavia Pennetta at the 2015 US Open.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000v3b6nddpx2ukx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Then, several years later, success came thick and fast. Marco Cecchinato had a breakthrough quarterfinals victory against Djokovic at the 2018 French Open, before Berrettini surged up the rankings and became the first Italian man to reach the quarterfinals of all four majors.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-2223946727.jpg\" alt=\"Lorenzo Sonego appears at this year's Wimbledon, where he reached the fourth round.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1067\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000w3b6nrrr7he1c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At this year\u2019s Wimbledon, four Italian men \u2013 eventual champion Sinner, Musetti, Lorenzo Sonego, and Flavio Cobolli \u2013 reached the fourth round for the first time, while Musetti has appeared in two grand slam semifinals over the past 18 months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000x3b6nexytcq5w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jasmine Paolini enjoyed a meteoric and unexpected rise last year, reaching back-to-back singles finals at the French Open and Wimbledon and winning Olympic doubles gold alongside veteran Sara Errani.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000y3b6nrw14l7x6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Weeks later, Errani and Andrea Vavassori became the first Italians to win the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/19\/sport\/tennis-us-open-mixed-doubles-controversy-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mixed doubles title at the US Open<\/a>, then claimed a second major title together at Roland Garros this year and defended their US Open title in <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2025\/08\/21\/sport\/tennis-us-open-mixed-doubles-errani-vavassori-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the tournament\u2019s reimagined format<\/a>. Errani has nine grand slam titles across doubles formats, including alongside Paolini at this year\u2019s French Open.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc000z3b6nfd9kh6ka@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Add in back-to-back Davis Cup titles and these can truly be called the glory days of Italian tennis. For Scanagatta, it\u2019s a case of success breeding success, one player inspiring a host of others.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc00103b6n82o7b5xq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe psychological effect is the same that (Bj\u00f6rn) Borg produced on (Mats) Wilander, (Stefan) Edberg, (Anders) J\u00e4rryd, (Joakim) Nystr\u00f6m in the 80s when there were four, even five Swedish players in the top 10,\u201d he says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeiq0ghc00113b6ne0lunp3k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s the same effect that Boris Becker and Steffi Graf made on German tennis, which produced afterwards Michael Stich, Tommy Haas, and (Nicolas) Kiefer.
