{"id":11170,"date":"2025-07-15T08:19:05","date_gmt":"2025-07-15T08:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/11170\/"},"modified":"2025-07-15T08:19:05","modified_gmt":"2025-07-15T08:19:05","slug":"us-imposes-a-17-duty-on-mexican-tomatoes-in-hopes-of-boosting-domestic-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/11170\/","title":{"rendered":"US imposes a 17% duty on Mexican tomatoes in hopes of boosting domestic production"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">The U.S. government said Monday it is immediately placing a 17% duty on most <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tomatoes-tariffs-duties-mexico-20526c2691a35b1bff53c2dedb0fa4f5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fresh Mexican tomatoes<\/a> after negotiations ended without an agreement to avert the tariff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Proponents said the import tax will help rebuild the shrinking U.S. tomato industry and ensure that produce eaten in the U.S. is also grown there. <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tariffs-impact-latino-businesses-0b7ccff363e647a49feb2fcc852cf8c5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mexico currently supplies<\/a> around 70% of the U.S. tomato market, up from 30% two decades ago, according to the Florida Tomato Exchange.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Robert Guenther, the trade group&#8217;s executive vice president, said the duty was \u201can enormous victory for American tomato farmers and American agriculture.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">But opponents said the import tax will make tomatoes more expensive for U.S. consumers. Mexican greenhouses specialize in vine-ripened tomatoes, while Florida tomatoes are typically grown in fields and picked green.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cAs an industry, we are saddened that American consumers will have to pay a tomato tax, or duty, for a reduced selection of the tomatoes they prefer, such as tomatoes on the vine, grape tomatoes, Romas, cocktail tomatoes and other specialty varieties,\u201d said Lance Jungmeyer, president of the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas, which represents importers of Mexican tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Tim Richards, a professor at the Morrison School of Agribusiness at Arizona State University, said U.S. retail prices for tomatoes will likely rise around 8.5% with a 17% duty. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Jacob Jensen, a trade policy analyst at the American Action Forum, a right-leaning policy institute, said areas with a higher reliance on Mexican tomatoes could see price increases close to 10%, since it will be more difficult to replace that supply, while other parts of the U.S. could see price increases closer to 6%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The duty stems from a longstanding U.S. complaint about Mexico&#8217;s tomato exports and is separate from <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-eu-mexico-66bf84d97dcd69bbd1f1108e42283afd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the 30% base tariff<\/a> on products made in Mexico and the European Union that President Donald Trump announced on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Commerce Department said in late April that it was withdrawing from a deal it first reached with Mexico in 2019 to settle allegations the country was exporting tomatoes to the U.S. at artificially low prices, a practice known as dumping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">As part of the deal, Mexico had to sell its tomatoes at a minimum price and abide by other rules. Since then, the agreement has been subject to periodic reviews, but the two sides always <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/767239a2c0284f10b9f81dc14f8e7f3d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reached an agreement<\/a> that avoided duties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In announcing its withdrawal from the Tomato Suspension Agreement, the Commerce Department said it had been \u201cflooded with comments\u201d from U.S. tomato growers who wanted better protection from Mexican goods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cMexico remains one of our greatest allies, but for far too long our farmers have been crushed by unfair trade practices that undercut pricing on produce like tomatoes. That ends today,\u201d <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/howard-lutnick-trump-tariffs-commerce-department-9788590bbee10d09d3cb91822b0c9687\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick<\/a> said in a statement. \u201cThis rule change is in line with President Trump\u2019s trade policies and approach with Mexico.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">But others, including the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vermont-climate-change-superfund-oil-companies-8509341725ec00d26cf74d56588178ab\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Chamber of Commerce<\/a> and the National Restaurant Association, had called on the Commerce Department to reach an agreement with Mexico. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, and Arizona Gov.
