Iga \u015awi\u0105tek made history with her first-round victory over Emiliana Arango at the US Open on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
With a 6-1, 6-2 victory, \u015awi\u0105tek broke Monica Seles’ record for most consecutive first-round tournament wins.<\/p>\n
Seles’ streak of 64 consecutive wins in WTA singles matches occurred from 1990 to 1996. Her run was ended by Kimiko Date at the Chase Championships in November 1996.<\/p>\n
\u015awi\u0105tek’s streak began in August 2022 after her loss to Ons Jabeur at the Western & Southern Open. The 24-year-old is undefeated in first-round matches at the US Open, extending her streak to 7-0. She is also a combined 26-1 in the opening round of the four Grand Slam events.<\/p>\n
Entering this year’s tournament as the No. 2 seed, \u015awi\u0105tek has advanced to the semifinals in each of the first three Grand Slam events. She is coming off one of the most dominant title performances at Wimbledon, defeating Amanda Anisimova 6\u20130, 6\u20130 in the finals.<\/p>\n
\u015awi\u0105tek needed just one hour to Arango and punch her ticket into the second round at the US Open.
