\n\tJon Stewart<\/a> revealed that he scrapped his intended opening monologue after the X account belonging to beloved Sesame Street character Elmo was hacked over the weekend<\/a>. The Daily Show<\/a> host explained that due to the anti-semitic, violent tweets that appeared on Elmo\u2019s account he felt he had to address the issue. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLet me be completely frank: We had a tremendous show planned for you,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cWell-designed, articulate, a tremendous deconstruction of the most interesting issues of the day. We prepared a whole piece on the new Trump tariffs, breaking down the different rates and their secondary impacts\u2014a truly illuminating dive into the overlooked role of the commodities markets in trade deficit accounting. It was going to be so funny. But sadly at the last minute we had to scrap all that because Elmo lost his fucking mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe host then played a clip of a news anchor describing how a hacker had posted anti-semitic tweets on Elmo\u2019s X account on Sunday. \u201cThis is what happens when you go too long without tickling Elmo,\u201d Stewart quipped. <\/p>\n

\n\tStewart added that the tweets were \u201cespecially shocking\u201d to him because he has collaborated with Elmo in the past. \u201cI\u2019ve worked with Elmo, as everybody definitely remembers,\u201d he said, showing a very old photo of him with the muppet. \u201cThe truth is, I\u2019m being honest, Elmo at the time was great to work with. He was. Was there a ton of coke on set? Of course. But hateful, racist Elmo is not the Elmo that I remember. I know what\u2019s in Elmo\u2019s heart. <\/p>\n

\n\tStewart then invited a rudimentary, hand puppet version of Elmo to join him on the show. The puppet appeared in front of an incel-inspired bedroom and began to chat with Stewart about the hacking incident. Hilariously, Stewart did the puppeteering and Elmo\u2019s voice himself during their conversation. <\/p>\n

\n\tAt first, Elmo insisted he really had been hacked. \u201cThey hacked Elmo!\u201d the muppet said. \u201cThey guessed Elmo\u2019s password was Elmo! Elmo123. Elmo knows passwords should have more numbers, but Elmo only knows three numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut when Stewart demanded more accountability Elmo admitted, \u201cIt\u2019s true, Elmo wasn\u2019t hacked. It was Elmo. But Elmo was radicalized by the manosphere. Elmo is part of the male loneliness epidemic. You-you-you see, what happened was, Elmo was doing his own research on flu shots. Six hours later, because of the algorithm, Elmo was moderating the QAnon Discord chat and building homemade bombs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe continued, when Stewart pressed him to take responsibility about being a role model for kids, \u201cAre you canceling Elmo?! Once again, the so-called tolerant left is policing speech that\u2019s inconvenient to their woke dogma. Who\u2019s the real puppet now, Jon?! You! You\u2019re the real puppet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe host replied that Elmo was getting caught up in \u201calt-right talking point word salad.\u201d \u201cYeah, you said it, not Elmo,\u201d the puppet said. \u201cElmo\u2019s alt-right. No reason to cancel Elmo\u2019s funding then.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIs that what this is about?\u201d Stewart replied, pretending to be shocked. \u201cYou\u2019re pandering to the right so you can keep your government funding for public broadcasting?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cElmo can\u2019t go back on the streets, Jon,\u201d Elmo replied. \u201cYou have no idea what it\u2019s like. Elmo\u2019s too pretty to live under a bridge, Jon. It\u2019s a life brought to you by the letter sucking dick, OK? Elmo won\u2019t! Elmo won\u2019t go back. Elmo\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0go back. No!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the second half of the show\u2019s opening segment, Stewart reflected on the right wing response to Trump\u2019s unwillingness to release the Epstein files. At the end, Elmo reappeared to shout, \u201cViva la revoluci\u00f3n! Antifa forever!\u201d The puppet said that listening to Stewart\u2019s \u201ctrenchant analysis of the many hypocrisies of the right have re-radicalized Elmo to the populist left.
