Late summer is the perfect time to get out on the water, whether you’re renting a sailboat or floating around in a lazy river. It’s the perfect way to stay cool and enjoy the great outdoors, whether you’re lounging on a beach in Mexico or kayaking in Alaska like travel photographer Jenn, AKA @wanderblest<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While kayaking in Nikiski, Alaska, on the morning of August 24, Jenn had “one of the most special wildlife encounters<\/a>” of her life. She was fishing for rainbow trout, but she happened upon a beautiful mother loon and her baby instead. These birds are normally shy, but this curious pair was absolutely drawn to Jenn and her peaceful energy!<\/p>\n

This is a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter, to say the least! It was so special to hear Jenn’s unfiltered reaction to the bird’s beautiful song<\/a>, because she appreciates the rarity of this moment just as much as her viewers do.<\/p>\n

“Oh wow,” one commenter began, ”\u00a0They don’t like to get close to people at all, so you’re the chosen one.” What an honor!<\/p>\n

Not many people get to have such a close view of wild birds<\/a>, let alone elusive loons, but Jenn made the mom and baby feel right at home. Perhaps she’s been on the lake before, or maybe she radiates calm and peaceful energy, but whatever it is, it’s something worth bragging about.<\/p>\n

I’m on exactly the same page as the commenter who wrote, “I was already as happy as can be seeing that loon this close, and then the baby appeared.” It was the cutest moment! Not only was I impressed that the baby bird<\/a> was under the water for so long, but I was also delighted with just how fluffy they were.<\/p>\n

What Is A Loon?<\/p>\n

Loons are large, duck-like birds that inhabit many lakes and coastal areas across North America. They’re most famous for their distinct and eerie calls, as well as their excellent diving and fishing skills.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, these unique birds are not an endangered species<\/a>. That being said, they are often elusive and shy away from humans, so moments like this one are rare. How lucky are we that Jenn caught the once-in-a-lifetime encounter on film?<\/p>\n
