\n\tJames Gunn\u2019s \u201cSuperman<\/a>\u201d has hit a snag in India<\/a> \u2013 not for action, but for its romance.<\/p>\n

\n\tIndia\u2019s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC<\/a>) removed two kiss scenes \u2013 most notably a 33-second mid-air kiss \u2013 deeming them \u201coverly sensual,\u201d per local reports, to achieve a UA (13+) rating before the film\u2019s July 7 certification. The cuts have fueled a backlash over inconsistent and conservative censorship<\/a> practices.<\/p>\n

\n\tOnline reactions captured the mood. Actor Shreya Dhanwanthary (SonyLIV\u2019s \u201cScam 1992,\u201d Prime Video\u2019s \u201cThe Family Man\u201d) posted, reacting to reports of the censorshi<\/a>p: \u201cIf this is true, this is RIDICULOUS!!! Some ridiculous crap happens every day. Every. Damn. Day. Sure this is the least of our worries but is something done about anything else? There is some crap every day. Every. Damn. Day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDigital creator Amol Jamwal wrote on X<\/a>: \u201cYou can have lewd double meaning jokes in Housefull 5. Beheadings & gory violence in Jaat But\u2026. Superman kissing Lois Lane is where we draw the line\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnother user on X posted<\/a>: \u201cCBFC would allow horrific scenes of violence and sexual assault in a U certified film that kids are freely allowed to watch, but won\u2019t allow consensual kissing in a U\/A comic book movie that kids should watch under adult supervision.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThis isn\u2019t the first such case this year. \u201cF1\u201d had a middle-finger emoji replaced with a fis<\/a>t, and \u201cThunderbolts\u201d was released in India with muted expletives. The recurring pattern has reignited debate over freedom of expression and the CBFC\u2019s broad powers under the Cinematograph Act. The CBFC\u2019s certification guidelines enshrine freedom of speech and expression but these rights are subject to \u201creasonable restrictions\u201d on various grounds, including \u201cdecency or morality.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 2021 dissolution of the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal has further complicated matters, leaving filmmakers with no industry recourse short of legal appeals through India\u2019s high courts \u2014 a time-consuming and expensive process, particularly for international studios with global rollouts.<\/p>\n

\n\tVariety has reached out to CBFC and Warner Bros. Discovery for comment. <\/p>\n
