But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/protein-grams-per-meal-rcna197039\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">how much<\/a> should you actually be consuming? And are there any types of protein that are better than others? <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-778f95\" class=\"body-graf\">We spoke with registered dietitian nutritionists and a chief nutrition officer from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/shop\/weightwatchers-health-wellness-awards-2025-rcna223744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WeightWatchers<\/a> to answer all of your burning questions about protein. Plus, our editors shared their preferred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/high-protein-snacks-rcna193742\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">protein snacks<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Our top picksEditor-loved protein snacks<\/p>\n<p>See 2 More<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-38cf11\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cA common guideline for active individuals is to consume around 1 gram of protein per pound of ideal body weight,\u201d says Gabrielle Kishner, a registered dietitian nutritionist. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-11b630\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;While there is no single, universal definition of an active individual, it generally refers to someone who engages in regular physical activity beyond everyday movements,\u201d she adds. \u201cThis can include consistent exercise sessions (such as 3-5 times per week), participation in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/shop\/best-gifts-sports-fans-t263961\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sports<\/a>, physically demanding work or frequent activities like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/walking-one-hour-a-day-for-a-month-results-rcna221498\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">walking<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/indoor-vs-outdoor-cycling-rcna218686\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cycling<\/a> or other recreational activities.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0067ae\" class=\"body-graf\">Contrary to popular belief, there is actually a science to figuring out what your &#8220;ideal body weight&#8221; should be. \u201cIdeal body weight can be estimated using the following formulas: for females, start with 100 pounds for the first 5 feet of height and add 5 pounds for each additional inch; for males, start with 106 pounds for the first 5 feet and add 6 pounds per additional inch,&#8221; explains Kishner. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a5034e\" class=\"body-graf\">Once you&#8217;ve calculated your ideal body weight, Kishner says you can use the following formula to determine how much protein you should have on a daily basis: <\/p>\n<p>First convert your ideal weight to kilograms. Divide your ideal weight in pounds by 2.2 to find the weight in kilograms. Then, multiply your weight in kilograms by the chosen protein factor based on your activity level to get total grams of protein per day. &#8220;Sedentary individuals typically require 0.8 to 1.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, while athletic or highly active individuals may need significantly more \u2014 typically 1.5 to 2.0 grams per kilogram \u2014 to support muscle repair, growth and performance,&#8221;  explains Kishner.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cbb349\" class=\"body-graf\">Using the above formula for an active individual whose ideal body weight is 178 pounds (about 80.9 kg), their daily protein goals would be would be between 121 grams of protein (80.9 kg x 1.5 kg protein factor) and 162 grams of protein (80.9 kg x 2 kg protein factor). <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e835cd\" class=\"body-graf\">In order to meet your goals, Kishner suggests including approximately 20-30 grams of protein per meal throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-518a8e\" class=\"body-graf\">Kishner emphasizes that protein recommendations vary &#8220;based on factors such as the type, intensity and duration of physical activity, as well as the person\u2019s body composition, overall health and personal goals. As always, consulting a registered dietitian is the best way to determine your individual protein needs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cc7481\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe general formula for calculating protein needs while taking a GLP-1 remains the same and is based on factors like body weight and activity level,\u201d explains Kishner.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9d78a4\" class=\"body-graf\">However, Kishner and Michelle Cardel, chief nutrition officer at WeightWatchers, agree that protein intake becomes even more important when you&#8217;re taking GLP-1 medication. \u201cThese medications act on appetite-regulating centers in the brain, slow gastric emptying and increase feelings of fullness, which makes it easier to eat less without feeling deprived,\u201d says Cardel.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fd45ec\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;[Protein] plays a critical role in preserving muscle mass during weight loss,\u201d explains Kishner. \u201cThese medications work by suppressing appetite, which often leads to a reduction in overall calorie intake and, consequently, protein consumption.
