Former Texas Southern University defensive tackle Tyler Martinez was fatally shot<\/a> blocks away from his alma mater’s campus, KHOU<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

Martinez was found by Houston Police Department officers with multiple gunshot wounds<\/a> at the Mac 4660 Apartments, located about a mile from the Texas Southern University campus, at around 8:15 p.m. local time on Friday (July 11). The former football player was pronounced dead at the scene after the Houston Fire Department attempted to perform life-saving efforts, according to Lt. Amber Khan.<\/p>\n

Martinez was reported to have gotten into a physical altercation with Isaac Jasper Robinson, 22, in the apartment complex’s parking garage before Jasper allegedly fired multiple rounds, striking Martinez in his torso three times, witnesses told police. Robinson, who is a sophomore at Texas Southern University, was reported to have initially fled the scene before eventually returning and confessing to police.<\/p>\n

Both Robinson and Martinez were reported to be residents of the apartment complex where the murder took place, though it’s unclear whether they knew each other prior to the incident. Robinson was charged with first-degree murder and booked into the Harris County Jail on a $250,000 bond and made his first court appearance last Saturday (July 12), with sentencing scheduled on Tuesday (July 15).<\/p>\n
