In the second instalment of the two-part series on the outlook for the Hong Kong and mainland Chinese stock markets, Zhang Shidong and Yulu Ao look at the catalysts that could underpin the rally. Read part one here<\/a>.When Chinese stocks hit a 10-year high<\/a> this week, Jian Shi Cortesi saw it as a sign that the rally could continue as overseas investors returned to the nation\u2019s onshore and offshore equities, which are worth a combined US$20 trillion.<\/p>\n

The Switzerland-based investment director at GAM Investments expects a further uptick in stocks, which will be underpinned by domestic investors\u2019 rotation out of fixed-income products, whose yields have fallen to record lows, and Beijing\u2019s push for technological innovation.<\/p>\n

\u201cGlobally, almost all major stock markets are trading at or near historical highs [and] Chinese equities \u2013 both A and H \u2013 have much room to catch up,\u201d said Cortesi, referring to mainland traded A shares denominated in yuan and H shares listed in Hong Kong. Her firm oversees US$15.8 billion of assets.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost importantly, we believe China offers \u2018undervalued innovation\u2019 to investors, including advanced manufacturing, AI<\/a> and robotics<\/a>,\u201d she added. \u201cThis will gradually become clear to the investment community.\u201dCortesi is among the global asset managers who have turned positive on Chinese stocks after the Shanghai Composite Index\u2019s stellar run this month, reversing years of underperformance that was compounded by the exodus of foreign investors. China\u2019s oldest benchmark of onshore stocks on Monday ascended to a level not seen since August 17, 2015.
