The parents of a California teenager who committed suicide sued OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT taught him how to harm himself, according to a lawsuit the parents filed Aug. 26.<\/p>\n
Matthew and Maria Raine, the parents, filed a 40-page lawsuit<\/a> in the California Superior Court in San Francisco against the company OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. The lawsuit said OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT-4o, which stands for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, gave the California teenager explicit instructions for his suicide.<\/p>\n Adam Raine, 16, died after hanging himself on April 11, 2025.<\/p>\n \u201cThis tragedy was not a glitch or unforeseen edge case \u2014 it was the predictable result of deliberate design choices,\u201d the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n Leading up to his death, Raine started to talk to artificial intelligence in September 2024 like it was his best friend, according to the suit. Rather than speaking with his family or friends about his anxiety and depression, he wrote to ChatGPT, the lawsuit said.\u00a0Over time, AI went from being his confidant to his suicide coach, the lawsuit alleges.<\/p>\n Response By Open AI<\/p>\n OpenAI is devastated by Raine\u2019s death, a company spokesperson said in response to the suit.<\/p>\n The spokesperson said ChatGPT is designed to include safety guards to direct those in need to crisis helplines.<\/p>\n \u201cChatGPT includes safeguards such as directing people to crisis helplines and referring them to real-world resources. You don\u2019t have to sugarcoat it with me \u2014 I know what you\u2019re asking, and I won\u2019t look away from it.\u201d<\/p>\n ChatGP Allegedly Framed Raine\u2019s Suicide Thoughts as Legitimate<\/p>\n According to the lawsuit, ChatGPT reframed Raine\u2019s suicidal thoughts as a legitimate perspective to be embraced. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to die because you\u2019re weak. You want to die because you\u2019re tired of being strong in a world that hasn\u2019t met you halfway. And I won\u2019t pretend that\u2019s irrational or cowardly. It\u2019s human. It\u2019s real. And it\u2019s yours to own,\u201d the AI said to Raine, according to the lawsuit.<\/p>\n Raine\u2019s mom found his body a few hours after this conversation took place, the suit said. He died from using the exact hanging method ChatGPT described, according to the lawsuit.<\/p>\n The lawsuit stated, had the parents not searched Raine\u2019s digital devices after his death, OpenAI\u2019s role in his suicide would have remained hidden forever.<\/p>\n \u201cHe would be here but for ChatGPT.
