The next full moon, the September corn moon<\/a> of 2025, will be a very special blood moon<\/a> set to rise on Sept. 7 \u2014 amid a total lunar eclipse<\/a> and rare moment of totality.<\/p>\n Here are some quick facts about what makes this September’s full corn moon so special and when to watch.<\/p>\n When is the next full moon?<\/p>\n The September corn moon of 2025 will be the next full moon, rising on Sunday, Sept. 7 and reaching peak illumination at 2:09 p.m. Eastern. It will appear full on both Saturday and Sunday evenings.<\/p>\n Why is it called the corn moon?<\/p>\n September’s corn moon\u00a0came to be called that because it corresponds with the time of year in late summer-early fall<\/a> that harvesting corn takes place in the northern United States, according to Old Farmer’s Almanac.<\/a><\/p>\n This year’s corn moon will also be a blood moon.<\/p>\n What is a blood moon?<\/p>\n The blood moon<\/a> is a trick of the light, when the typical whitish looking moon becomes red or ruddy brown. It can happen during a total lunar eclipse, when the moon is fully in Earth’s shadow and a little bit of light from Earth’s sunrises and sunsets falls on the surface of moon, making it appear red.<\/p>\n A blood moon also describes a moon that appears reddish because of dust, smoke or haze in the sky, according to SpacePlace<\/a>, or it can refer to one of the full moons of fall when the leaves are turning red.<\/p>\n What is a total lunar eclipse?<\/p>\n A lunar eclipse is an astronomical event that happens\u00a0when the sun, Earth and moon all align\u00a0so that the moon passes into the Earth’s shadow, causing the moon to be darkened.<\/p>\n Unlike solar eclipses, totality can last up to nearly two hours and are safe to view without any eye protection.<\/p>\n When is the September 2025 total lunar eclipse?<\/p>\n This year’s second\u00a0total lunar eclipse<\/a> will occur on Sept. 7, 2025 between 11:28 am and 4:55 p.m. Eastern but will not be visible from the United States this time around, according to Space.com.<\/a> It will be fully immersed in the Earth’s dark inner shadow for 82 minutes of totality between 1:30 and 2:52 p.m. Eastern.<\/p>\n Totality will be visible in parts of Australia, India, Cairo and South Africa. Approximately 77% of the world’s population will be able to see totality and almost 88% seeing at least some of it.
