Historically, September is the month for new TV, and despite everything that\u2019s changed since the annual television calendar shifted from Fall<\/a> and Spring seasonal releases to a year-round onslaught of \u201ccontent,\u201d that\u2019s very much still the case. So don\u2019t be surprised to see Netflix<\/a> stepping up its originals game to compete with a deluge of offerings from across the vast spectrum of entertainment we still call \u201ctelevision.\u201d<\/p>\n

So before you sign up for a month of Peacock in order to catch \u201cThe Office\u201d spinoff, \u201cThe Paper,\u201d<\/a> or flip over to HBO for the \u201cMare of Easttown\u201d creator\u2019s next trip to DelCo, \u201cTask,\u201d<\/a> or set your DVR (people still have DVRs, right?) to record FX\u2019s Ethan Hawke-starring \u201cThe Lowdown,\u201d<\/a> or activate your free trial of Apple TV+ for the fifth season of \u201cSlow Horses,\u201d<\/a> or check if your Disney+ bundle includes \u201cOnly Murders in the Building\u201d<\/a> Season 5 (seriously, who can tell what\u2019s available on any of the Disney platforms anymore? not me!) \u2014 OK, actually, you should do all those things. It\u2019s a great month for TV, and I already know a few of these shows warrant your full and dedicated attention.<\/p>\n

But hey, Netflix has new shows, too \u2014 two of which will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival at the beginning of September, ahead of their U.S. debuts on the service just a few weeks later. (Look for reviews of \u201cBlack Rabbit\u201d and \u201cWayward\u201d out of TIFF!) There\u2019s also a few intriguing acquisition titles, none better than the stellar second season of AMC\u2019s \u201cInterview with the Vampire.\u201d<\/a> But if that\u2019s too bloody for ya, all six seasons of the 2010s broadcast hit \u201cNashville\u201d will be available to woo you, as well.<\/p>\n

Sure, there\u2019s the second half of \u201cWednesday\u201d Season 2 (though it\u2019s hard to get overly excited after the ho-hum Part 1<\/a>), and two new seasons of \u201cLove Is Blind\u201d (the Brazil and France versions), but if you\u2019re looking for something with a little more staying power than a binge, rest assured: \u201cThe Great British Baking Show\u201d is back! I know, I know \u2014 the cultural fervor around this one peaked a few years back, but hey, there\u2019s still nothing quite like appreciating the kindness and generosity of talented British chefs\u2026 especially while you curse them out over #CakeFails and curdled jokes. (I\u2019m looking at you, Noel.)<\/p>\n

In the end, all of this \u2014 every scripted show I\u2019ve listed, and plenty more I have yet to bring up \u2014 will pale in comparison to TV\u2019s true September king: football. But hey, there are only so many concussions you can witness before remembering you, too, have a brain, and its cells would appreciate a proper stretch now and then. One of these scripted series has to offer that. Let\u2019s find out which!<\/p>\n

\t1. \u201cBlack Rabbit\u201d<\/p>\n

Best Reason to Watch: There are more than a few good reasons to check out this one, many of which are found in its cast \u2014\u00a0Jude Law may be the peak TV era\u2019s acting MVP, when it comes to using his movie star status to make challenging, rewarding series. Jason Bateman has a great track record on Netflix and an even better one when he directs. Troy Kotsur as a brutal mob boss is already giving off Pete Postlethwaite in \u201cThe Town\u201d vibes (which is the greatest compliment I could offer).<\/p>\n

But the sneaky best reasons to watch are behind the camera: Laura Linney directs Episodes 3 and 4, while Justin Kurzel handles the final two entries. Hot off their collaboration on \u201cThe Order,\u201d Kurzel and Law are already a trusted team to track. Let\u2019s see how far they can go.<\/p>\n

Best Reason to Watch: Mae Martin. The Canadian comedian\u2019s last Netflix series was the excellent \u201cFeel Good,\u201d a two-season gem that premiered in March 2020 (yikes) and yet still seems underseen. \u201cWayward\u201d is a sizable departure in genre and tone, but that\u2019s an exciting choice for a young talent, and Martin has earned a little trust. Plus, she had the good sense to cast Toni Collette, who\u2019s always worth watching.<\/p>\n

\t3. \u201cInterview with the Vampire\u201d Season 2<\/p>\n

Best Reason to Watch: Um, it\u2019s incredible? One of the best shows of 2024? Sam Reid\u2019s stagebound return evokes the perfect blend of giddy\/terrified glee? You just gotta watch it, guys. And I say that as someone who really struggled to get through the first half of Season 1.<\/p>\n

\t4. \u201cWednesday\u201d Season 2, Part 2<\/p>\n

Best Reason to Watch: Steve Buscemi. With apologies to the rest of the cast and director Tim Burton, only Buscemi is operating at the proper levels of weirdo delight. Here\u2019s hoping he can keep it up for four more hours (and however many more seasons \u201cWednesday\u201d decides to run).<\/p>\n

Best Reason to Watch: The trailer looks a little formulaic \u2014\u00a0like, Adult Animation + Family Sitcom + CBS\u2019s \u201cGhosts\u201d \u2014 but Will Arnett is a sneaky-great voice actor. If you haven\u2019t watched \u201cThe Great North\u201d yet, definitely try that first.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re not running the bagel truck in Los Angeles, you can\u2019t call yourself that.<\/p>\n
