The National Hurricane Center on Sunday said a system moving into the Atlantic could develop into the season\u2019s next tropical depression or storm.<\/p>\n
As of the NHC\u2019s 2 p.m. tropical outlook, the agency expected a tropical wave to emerge off the west coast of Africa by Monday.<\/p>\n
\u201cEnvironmental conditions are conducive for slow development of this system while it moves westward to west-northwestward at around 15
mph across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic this week,\u201d\u00a0forecasters said.<\/p>\n
The NHC gave it a 30% chance to develop in the next seven days.<\/p>\n

It has a 30% formation over the next 7 days, and should reach TAFB’s forecast area (35W) by the middle of next week. pic.twitter.com\/uxLLkGLjdL<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 NHC_TAFB (@NHC_TAFB) August 29, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n If it develops, it would be the seventh tropical cyclone of the season and could become Tropical Storm Gabrielle.<\/p>\n The most recent, Tropical Storm Fernand, became post-tropical early Thursday in the north Atlantic.<\/p>\n Only one of the six named storms has reached hurricane status. What had been Hurricane Erin, which grew to Category 5 major hurricane status with 160 mph winds, ended up not making landfall, but did prompt warnings in the Caribbean and U.S. Atlantic coast earlier this month.<\/p>\n The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in early August updated<\/a>\u00a0its season forecast to call for 13-18 named storms this year, of which five to nine would grow into hurricanes. Two to five of those would develop into major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher.<\/p>\n The height of hurricane season runs from mid-August into October while the entire six-month season runs June 1 to Nov. 30.<\/p>\n Originally Published: August 31, 2025 at 8:00 AM EDT<\/p>\n
