Only one American man remains in the US Open<\/a>, but he shows no signs of being ready to go home.<\/p>\n

Fourth seed Taylor Fritz<\/a> earned a statement 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 victory in just one hour and 38 minutes against 21st seed Tomas Machac<\/a> Sunday evening to reach the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows. He will next take on 24-time major winner Novak Djokovic<\/a> or qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It has been a difficult few days for American men, with Ben Shelton<\/a>, Frances Tiafoe<\/a> and Tommy Paul<\/a> all exiting the tournament. But Fritz, who needed four sets in both the second and third rounds, produced a flawless performance inside Louis Armstrong Stadium, triumphing without facing a break point.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a tough week for the guys. I guess I wasn\u2019t expecting everything to happen,\u201d Fritz said. \u201cI felt really, really good about our chances this week, but I\u2019m happy to be here. I\u2019m happy to be the last one standing at least and hopefully since I\u2019m the last one the crowd will really get behind me and will me through it.\u201d<\/p>\n

One year ago at the US Open<\/a>, Fritz fell just one victory short of becoming the first American man to win a major singles title since Andy Roddick<\/a> at Flushing Meadows in 2003. He looks intent on making another charge towards Slam glory.<\/p>\n

Fritz hit 30 winners \u2014 including 14 aces \u2014 compared to just 18 unforced errors against Machac and won 91 per cent of his first-serve points. The last time he played Machac, at this year\u2019s United Cup<\/a>, the Czech was the better player for most of their clash before retiring.<\/p>\n

On this occasion, Fritz left no doubt by consistently putting pressure on his opponent without giving him any opportunities to break through. The American now leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head series 3-0.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had some battles the past couple matches, but just felt very dialed in, ready to go tonight,\u201d Fritz said. \u201cThought I played just really solid, put a lot of balls in the court, was aggressive at the right times and backed it up well with good serving.\u201d<\/p>\n
